A weekend to forget: MX-5 Cup at Assen Full of energy after what was a great race weekend three weeks earlier in Belgium, the I.L. Motorsport team left for Jack’s Racing Day at Assen. A big event, open to the public and with an exciting line-up. After some unpredictable weather in the practice sessions, the weekend got off to a good start as driver András Király grabbed pole position in qualifying. As per the rules however, the top 10 drivers get reversed for the starting grid of the first race. Coming from P10 and with cars left and right, there was nowhere for the I.L. Motorsport car to go into turn one as suddenly the track is blocked by a couple of stationary cars. Contact was inevitable with considerable damage to the front end as the result. The car was still running, but without a front bumper the lack of top speed was noticeable. Despite this, András fought back to fifth place before the engine went into limp mode, an issue that the team thought was solved before Zolder. Having to reset the car, a good result was off the table. The team did an amazing job to get the car up and running again to start from pole position in race 2. During the first lap, a balance shift in the repaired car resulted in a snap oversteer situation and a excursion over the wet grass. Despite this, the podium was still a realistic target after a safety car situation bunched up the field again. When the race got back underway, the engine went into limp mode again, eliminating any chance of a good result. All in all, a weekend to forget. Much work is needed to repair the car after the start incident, but most importantly to solve the limp mode issues before continuing the season. First win of the season in MX-5 Cup for I.L. Motorsport! With the team travelling to Belgium, it found a sunny and warm Zolder circuit ready to go for the MX-5 action. Arriving at the track on Thursday evening, mechanics Maikel, Maarten and Bart worked hard to get the cup brake kit on the car. Bigger caliper, pads and disc for more stopping power without fading: a really welcome upgrade for Zolder, a track all about braking. Shaking down the car in free practice, the team resolved some adjustment issues with the brakes, and the car was ready to go for qualifying. The timed session resulted in the fourth time, which would be the starting position for the second race. Per regulation, the grid gets reversed for the first race, which means starting in 7th. Right from the get go, driver András Király found himself in a close battle for the podium. With overtaking happening left right and center, András slowly made his way up to second before successfully attacking for the lead of the race! After leading for a lap, a frantic couple of corners followed: being overtaken into the second chicane, András had to cut the track, but was unable to get back in line since the following cars were so close to the leader. Falling back to P4, the two new leaders collided which allowed the I.L. Motorsport car to come back to P2 and then back in the lead half a lap later. What a crazy sequence! András then held on to cross the line for the first victory of the season, a welcome change from the recent technical issues! The second race was less spectacular, as the warm weather made it difficult to follow other cars in the slipstream due to overheating. Managing the pace and temperatures, András finished third to close of the weekend with a double podium finish! On to Assen in three weeks. Clean sweep for I.L. Motorsport in the Max5 Cup! Last weekend, more than 30 Mazda MX-5 NA Cup cars saw the green flag in another episode of great racing at Zandvoort. Having fixed the brake problems that caused him to retire in the previous race by changing the master brake cylinder, last year’s champion Koen Bol started the Day in his I.L. Motorsport Mazda MX-5 with further issues. A mix up in alignment gear meant that the setup was not correct, and he had to drive the qualifying with a suboptimal car. Considering this, a second starting position was not bad! Fixing the problem in between qualifying and race one, all was back to normal for the first race. As is almost every race in the Max5 Cup, the identical cars, weighing 960kg including driver and producing 130hp make for a great battle. This is aided by the open roll cage, and on this day, a strong headwind on the main straight. Koen quickly took the lead at he start of the race, but lost it after a poor restart following a code 60 neutralization. Timing the run to the line perfectly, Koen managed to still win the first race! Race two saw a similar scenario, where Koen again won with half a car length! The third and final race of the day started with unexpected raindrops just as the race was about to start. With the drivers on full attack despite the slippery track, the racing action was again spectacular. Again, despite the best efforts of his opponents, Koen crossed the line in first. Max5 Cup season 2021 is go! After a long wait, no less than 27 Mazda MX-5 NA’s were on the starting grid at Zandvoort for the Pinksterraces, the inaugural races on whit Sunday. Among these, I.L. Motorsport driver Koen Bol seeks to defend his 2020 championship title in the 2021 campaign. On a dry but windy morning, the 15-minute qualifying was interrupted by a crash. Luckily, Koen still got one flying lap on the board, starting third for race one. New this weekend was a rolling start, which resulted in chaos as the pole-sitter took off before the green flag, for which he later got black flagged. From third, Koen fell back in the ensuing chaos and had his work cut out for the race. Fighting back from 8th position, it took a few laps before he was back in the lead! A intense battle with the #6 car followed, and the race seemed won until another competitor bump-drafted both the #6 and himself past Koen on the way to the line. Third place in race one, which then automatically became the same starting position for race two. Race two saw a similar fight between the top three. In the closing laps, a brake problem on Koen’s car caused the rear wheels to lock in heavy braking zones and attacking was impossible. Third again. Between the races, the I.L. Motorsport team worked on the brakes of Koen’s car, and the problem was believed fixed. Running in second place during the third race, the brakes then failed completely. Koen was able to beach the car in the gravel trap with no other damage, but a good result was gone. The team later found the issue to be in the master cylinder. There are still a few weeks to go before the next event at Assen, the car will be fixed and the challenge is on! Revisiting engine issues AND the podium in MX-5 season opener The 2021 season of the MX-5 Cup started on Zandvoort with some cold but sunny weather for the free practice running. Then, just before qualifying the heavens opened. Going out on rain tires, András quickly put in the fastest time of the session. During this lap, András had a big moment coming out of the last corner driving over a bunch of dirt thrown on the road by another car. Unfortunately, this meant the time didn’t hold on in the end, just being pipped to pole position. Reversed grid meant that second place on the grid was converted in to a ninth starting position for the first race. When the lights went out András had a super start, moving from ninth to fourth after the first corner, and then into second place two corners later! Not settling for second, he then moved into the lead at the end of the first lap. Driving comfortably in the lead just two laps later problems kicked in: entering the Kumho corner, the engine went into limp mode in an identical fashion to last year’s race. Restarting took a lot of time and András rejoined the race in last place. He then fought back to 8th spot. It’s very frustrating to experience the same problem that lost us the championship last year, particularly after hours of testing without any issues. For the second race, András quickly moved into the lead, after which an intense battle with competitors Filip Wojtowicz and Pim van Riet ensued. In true MX-5 Cup style, the trio switched positions multiple times. With Filip and Pim choosing to use their two new “joker” tires, András and Filip went side by side on the last lap with András missing out on the win by one tenth of a second. A great display of hard but fair racing. Looking back at the weekend, feelings are mixed. The engine problem needs to be solved.
