The Langhorne Hotel. Like so many of Folkestone's beautiful hotels, it was demolished, but this one as a result of bomb blast damage in WW2. On the aerial view (hard to see from iphone) the hotel is supported by wooden beams in 1949. Did you know that the building that is now known as Cowdray Ruins was once one of the finest fortified Tudor mansions in the country? . Sir David Owen (who was probably the illegitimate son of Owen Tudor, the grandfather of Henry VII, the first Tudor king) was mainly responsible for the building the house of which are today ruins. He pulled down the old Bohun residence and built much of the "new" Cowdray House, whose castle-like appearance was a status symbol of the times. . In September there will be a chance to find out about this fascinating period of history in the Medieval Hunting Lodge talk on Cowdray Ruins, which was incorporated into the grand Tudor house. Guinness and the big house 🏠🎩 had the most incredible weekend with @historysmaid and @englishheritage at Audley End House and Gardens, where I have previously portrayed a Victorian scullery maid! Guinness and I got to be a part of their Victorian Horses display, showing off all things side saddle. It was so exciting to wear a beautiful riding habit that I was very fortunate to be lent for the event, and bring along my young horse. I’m so proud of how much we learned over the course of 4 shows, performing for crowds of over 3000 people! St Albans Cathedral. The Gothic Phase - West Front and Nave. Part 3 At the end of the twelfth century, Abbot John de Cella set about rebuilding the cathedral’s west front, however, due to a lack of financial planning the work was halted midway through construction. The completion of the west front, and the rebuilding of the western most piers of the nave, was undertaken by the new Abbot, William of Trumpington, in the early thirteenth century. The present west front, built in the late nineteenth century, is essentially a replica of the thirteenth century Early English Gothic facade, except for the Decorated Gothic revival west window, as the restorers of the cathedral, Lord Grimthorpe, had a strong aversion to the Perpendicular Gothic west window and the generally unkempt state of the post-Reformation west front. In 1323, the eastern most piers on the south side of nave collapsed and were replaced by some unique hybrid gothic piers. Henry Wy, the mason tasked with the reconstruction of those piers, chose to closely match the existing Early English Gothic piers at the west end of the nave but added his own distinctly fourteenth century Decorated Gothic style detailing and ornament.

Many movies have had scenes filmed here due to its Gothic facade, however underneath its a Tudor wood and brick built building. Knebworth House is not only famous in film, but also in some of the best known and biggest concerts in British Rock history. I took this during our visit, peeking through the house's courtyard wall at the main front entrance. 📍Warkworth Castle . Unfortunately I did not enter the castle grounds, not because I’m Scottish and feared getting shot, because I wasn’t willing to pay £23 (so probably cause I’m Scottish, cause folk say we’re known as being right arsed). This castle looks stunning, is steeped in history and is nestled in such a picturesque village. But £3 to park and then a further £10 per adult, is taking the mick. I get that the English Heritage Charity is a charity and looks after over 400 historic sites.. but £10 admission is a bit steep. The National Trust for Scotland are getting a bit like this these days too. The Lawn 🌳 Built in 1820, The Lawn was once used as a hospital for people suffering with mental illness. Interestingly, the hospital actually helped shape the future of mental health care at the time. The doctors here pioneered the treatment of patients without physical restraints, a principle which was subsequently adopted by a number of larger hospitals. By 1985, the hospital had closed and the building was repurposed as an events venue. Today, it is home to @stokescoffee, who have both a roastery and a café here – the latter of which is housed in the old hospital cookhouse! A smoot - one of many dry stone features built in the grounds of @shibdenhall by the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch, one of the largest branches of the Dry Stone Walling Association based in the town of Otley in West Yorkshire. A wonderful tribute to the skills and traditions of the area, smoots are small holes at the foot of the wall designed to allow small creatures through to the other side of the wall and also act as through wall drainage. And just like that tournament season was over. What a month it has been! We have had the best time working at locations around the country, meeting so many lovely families and fighting for all of the amazing crowds! Whilst our flags are down and our armour hurrying back to the ‘Dressed to kill’ workshop our knights will enough a well earned break (and a shower) before returning to regular duties and preparing themselves for the next tournament season. We wanted to say a huge heartfelt thank you to each and every single one of you who have raised your voices, waved your flags and come to say hi. You are all as an important part of the tournament as we are, the noise you make spurs us on throughout the harder rounds more than you’ll ever know! If it's on your way and you have an English Heritage pass then Mount Grace Priory is worth a quick stop, but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit. It was a medieval Carthusian monastery, founded in the 14th century. Here each monk lived in solitude and the reconstruction of a monk's cell is interesting. A cell had 2 floors, 3 rooms on the bottom for sleeping, eating and praying and the top floor for work such as weaving. Each cell had its own garden and cloister and the whole cell was surrounded by a high wall. Food and essentials were delivered to the cell through a small hatch. Here there were cells for 25 monks. The manor house was originally the priory guest house however it was converted to a home in the 17th century. I walked the Hadrians Wall in 4 days. Meant to be 84 miles but calculated to exactly 100 miles (satisfying) in the end. Camping along the way and carrying my food for the 4 days on my back. Hadrians wall is a World Heritage site, marching from sea to sea. It was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. It took around 6 years to build and the Romans guarded it for 300 years. (I did my research along the way). There is now 17 miles left of the wall with many ruins along the way. This was a super last minute adventure. I decided I was going to walk it the day before I got the train up North and checked the route the night before walking. But it was super important. I’ve done long distance walks before and I know, I am stubborn enough that there was no doubt that I wouldn’t finish it. Since getting glandular fever this time last year my energy levels have not been the same and immune system took a big hit. Feeling I had the energy for this and completing it in good health has made me feel I’m getting back to Alice again. That makes me happy.
