Mr Chonky, also affectionately known as "Bui Bui", is rather sick. He is a community cat and was warded at our regular vet for two nights when his feeders approached us for help. Unfortunately, he's down with cat flu, which is usually caused by a viral infection and challenging to treat. As his system is working to fight the infection, Mr Chonky is very tired and doesn't want to move at all. He spends his days sleeping. His foster is so concerned that he is constantly checking to see if Mr Chonky is still breathing. The symptoms aren't improving although he had been to the vet and was hospitalized. Discharged after two nights because we couldn’t afford to keep him at the vet any longer. At the time, he was warded with Ginger the paralyzed cat, as well as Toby the neglected dog. Mr Chonky’s first vet bill was $2000 with blood tests, chest x-ray and a heart ultrasound done. Cat flu sometimes takes days or weeks to recover. Mr Chonky is currently getting nursing care from a foster. Mr Chonky is a community cat in Sengkang and as the feeders continue to update us daily on his well-being, we hope that he will not have to be rushed back to the vet again. A dog lover, Daryl, sent us this video of a dog living in the cemetery and asked if we could help. We were saddened that it was skin and bones, and shocked when we saw the four swollen limbs. We said we would try; at HOPE, we use manual labour as we don’t have high tech stuff like remote traps. But a few of us took time off and went down this evening to search for the dog, amidst many tombstones. After almost 3 hours of combing the rows of tombstones, we finally found the sick dog. We have rushed her to the vet; she is in a bad shape. Workers told us she has been in this condition for 3 to 4 months and they expected her to die soon. It’s been an extremely long day – we will update as soon as we gather more information from the vet. We’ve named her Daisy and she will require a blood transfusion if her condition doesn’t stabilize. Do you remember Zeus? Well this sweet old miracle dog has undergone a huge transformation from when we first rescued him. Looking back, Zeus has overcome a lot in terms of recovery just by looking at how fast he moves now! His handsome coat of fur and plump belly is evident of him loving his new life. The dog that had been left alone in a flat unit for weeks is safe now at our vet. Blacky, renamed Toby, is estimated to be about 5+ years old. The current owners took over from a family when he was about 3 months old. The previous family had tied his mouth and he still bears the scars on his muzzle. He did not have it easy either in the current family. Toby was hit by an object that was thrown around during a family quarrel. Life has been so hard but despite all, he still craves affection and attention, although he is scared of the leash. He has mild separation anxiety and barks for a while when you leave but once he knows you’ve gone out for a while, he stops and settles down. Unfortunately, to relieve his anxiety, he is exhibiting destructive behaviour, chewing on objects and biting the walls of the vet room he is confined in. Toby needs a foster asap, someone who will teach him to walk on leash and maybe even turn his life around by giving him a forever home. Potential foster should preferably have experience in rehabilitating neglected dogs. To date, he has not show any signs of aggression. Toby has slight kidney issues, possibly caused by dehydration, but this should go back to normal once he gets proper food and water. He needs to be fed small frequent meals for now, to let his body get used to food again. 7-year old Mr Chonky is a well-loved community cat. Recently he fell sick and developed respiratory infection. A resident in Sengkang sought our advice this week when he noticed his community cat, Mr Chonky, had trouble breathing. The cat's health took a turn for the worse overnight, became lethargic, rejected food and his eyes turned watery. We had initially thought it was cat flu but we decided Mr Chonky needed vet care quickly and offered our help. Two residents readily stepped in to trap Mr Chonky and rushed him to our regular vet in the evening. After a night of critical nursing, Mr Chonky is now stable with no more heavy respiration. However, cloudy patches were observed in his chest Xray. As his name tells you, Mr Chonky is severely overweight at 8kg, he has an increased risk of heart disease. The vet advised to get his heart scanned. After a some deliberation, we decided to ward him further to help him recover as well as proceed with his heart ultrasound. We are covering Mr Chonky’s medical bills, but our funds are not enough with 2 more new rescues that came in last night. In addition to last night's rescue, a ginger cat was sent to our vet for emergency treatment close to midnight. A factory worker whom we know through our feeding routine called our volunteer when he found the cat crying in a corner last night. He filmed the cat dragging his hind legs for our assessment. We decided the cat needed immediate vet care. The factory worker rushed the cat in carrier, to our vet on his motorbike without hesitation. Initial assessments: No telltale signs of accident (based on x-ray) Back legs were cold Abnormal sensation on front legs Frothing at mouth Suspected case of Aortic Thromboembolism (FATE) - a condition of cats in which a large blood clot (or thrombus) has traveled and lodged itself in an inappropriate location that cuts off the blood supply to parts of the body. Sadly, the ginger cat passed on this morning due to heart failure. He was brought in too late. Our volunteers are arranging his cremation. A social welfare organization, Fei Yue, contacted us today and informed us that a dog had been left home alone since Oct 4. The dog’s male owner has been in remand while the wife has moved out – and she didn’t have money to go over to feed the dog daily. We have taken the dog and rushed him to the vet. He has not had food or water for weeks. We will have a vet check him thoroughly and ward him till his condition is stable. We will need help with vet bills as well as a foster. We have good news to share about Mantou! He has recovered well from clostridium intestinal infection and now weighs 22.1 kg (up from 19.8 kg). This is his ideal weight as he cannot afford to be too heavy or else his legs won’t be able to carry his body weight. Mantou was just back at the vet for a review. The night before the vet visit, Mantou seemed to be in some pain and discomfort and didn’t sleep most of the night. His fosterer did all they could to get Mantou to feel better but nothing could ease his discomfort. It could perhaps be pain from his old body; after all Mantou is almost 17 already! At the vet, Mantou had 3 injections: cartrophen, iron, and darbopoeitin as he is slightly anemic (note that anaemia is common in senior dogs.) Mantou will continue to have regular vet visits once a month, just so to ensure that he continues to be healthy and well. His recent vet bill was $580. Caring for a senior dog is neither easy nor cheap – but we hope to do our best at Hope Dog Rescue for all the dogs under our charge, as they are our responsibility until they leave us for their furever homes or the rainbow bridge. #meetmantou #hopedogrescue #adoptdontshop

Chance has left us. At HOPE, we do what we possibly can, in order to give dogs a chance to lead better lives. With Chance, however, there was nothing more we could do to improve his quality of life. Chance was found to have oral melanoma and towards the end, liver failure as the mouth cancer had spread down his throat to his organs. His condition was serious and irreversible. When we brought him to the vet last Thursday, he already wasn’t eating well on his own. He vomited his food when syringe fed, was weak and lethargic; even breathing was an effort. Chance would gasp for air every few seconds. His liver parameters did not show any sign of improvement despite being on drip and antibiotics since Thursday. On this, we had to make the extremely difficult decision to help him pass on. At this juncture, we felt it was kinder to relieve him of his pain and suffering instead of letting him struggle and have a slow, painful death. It is a difficult and solemn time for our young volunteers who had spent a fair amount of time with Chance over the past couple of months - from rescuing him in August to feeding him food and pain meds at the factory every night after work, since Chance’s first discharge from hospital. Thanks to our vet, whose rest was disrupted. She came into the clinic in the middle of the night specially for the boy, and to guide and counsel our volunteers through the process. We are comforted that Chance’s final moments were surrounded with lots of love from his regular volunteers, Jean, Fadzil, JS, Weiling, Kenneth and Daryl. Our heartfelt thanks to them for all they have done for Chance. We will miss this boy who was a fighter, and was known to be a pack leader. He was deeply loved by the factory workers, his feeders and our volunteers. We are truly grateful to many who contributed to Chance’s wellbeing and helped with his medical needs. Take care everyone.
