Malus, more commonly called crabapple, is a genus of about 35 species of deciduous trees from Europe, Asia and North America. These trees are beautiful with color and flowers in the spring, but in the fall season the trees’ fruit offers a glorious range of color to enjoy. Our collection, found on Vista Road, ranges from deep red to yellow “apples”. In 1984, women from the For-Win-Ash garden club designed and dedicated the Naomi Camper garden at Cylburn Arboretum in honor of their first club president. The For-Win-Ash garden club formed to represent the Baltimore neighborhoods of Forest Park, Windsor Hills and Ashburton. The goal was to keep these neighborhoods green, clean and beautiful. Naomi Camper was an active gardener and member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland. She belonged to many civic organizations and was once named Woman-Of-The-Year by the Afro-American. Want to see the inside of the Cylburn mansion? @doorsopenbmore is hosting an annual celebration of Baltimore architecture and neighborhoods this weekend. As a participant, Cylburn mansion will be open this Saturday, October 1 (10am-4pm). Come on out and peek inside! The Cylburn house was built between 1863 and 1888. Originally, Jesse Tyson, purchased land to build a summer home for himself and his recently widowed mother. Unfortunately, she died before the home was completed. Cylburn was designed by the young and upcoming George A. Frederick, who, at the ripe old age of 19, created Baltimore’s City Hall and the Cylburn mansion at age 21. The building is Victorian Renaissance Revival in design, and was noted for its inlaid floors, marble baths, leaded glass, plasterwork, tall windows and wide porches. Formal gardens and lawns with trees planted by Jesse Tyson himself were surrounded by natural woodland filled with wildflowers, wildlife and native and migrating birds. #cylburnarboretum #opendoorsbaltimore #baltimore #bmore #charmcity #historicmansion

It is hard to believe that tomorrow is the first day of autumn! Fall is a great time to find nuts on the grounds at Cylburn Arboretum. Our black walnut tree (Juglans nigra) is prolific. Children who visit us love the shape and size. The second picture is a Chinese chestnut. It is not actually a porcupine but it sure feels like one so be careful picking them up! Little hands love to grab these but it can hurt. #cylburnarboretum #baltimore #autumn

This flower is positively crawling with activity! Just in front of the Gazebo at Cylburn, you can see this amazing plant- Giant Angelica-covered in insect life. We have seen praying mantises, caterpillars, and now ants! While ants aren't great pollinators, these ants do appear to be eating the bountiful flower nectar. Why aren't they great pollinators? For one thing, their bodies are so small and smooth, they can get in and out of flowers without having pollen stick to them. That being said, ants can perform pollination in some cases and even more importantly eat plant pests, especially those like aphids that produce a sticky honeydew. Meet Archie, one of the many sweet dogs of Cylburn. Archie paused for some pics (swipe ➡️) on top of our seeding stones. As a gateway into the maple collection, this arrangement of stones was inspired by winged maple fruit known as “samara.” The form is meant to resemble an abstract wing and seed. You might be wondering, is Archie allowed on the seeding stones? Absolutely! In a landscape void of durable climbing structures, the stone samara is meant to be explored. So feel free to sit, lean, lay or climb it the next time you see it. Blackberry lily, or Iris domestica, has many seasons of interest. During the height of summer, when it is adorned with bright orange flowers, it is not obvious where the plant gets its common name. But by this time of year, the flowers give way to seed pods which split open when ripe with each pod revealing a blackberry-like seed cluster.
