In honor of pride month, we are celebrating dance genres that originated from queer communities 🏳️‍🌈 Voguing is a compelling and distinctive dance style that emerged from the Harlem ballroom scene in the late 1960s. Conceived within the LGBTQ+ communities, particularly the Black and Latino cultures, this dance style is deeply rooted in a socio-cultural movement. The dance's technical components consist of model-like poses, sharp angular movements, and acrobatic elements known as dips. Dancers typically strike extravagant, pose-oriented sequences that mimic the high fashion runway models, combined with more angular, linear movements reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Voguing frequently involves a catwalk, a sashay, a dip (which is a dramatic drop to the floor), and hand performance (which emphasizes the precision and fluidity of hand and arm movements). Voguing was not just a dance form, but an act of resistance, identity, and expression during an era of widespread prejudice and discrimination. The ballroom scene, where voguing originated, was a safe haven for marginalized individuals who often found themselves ostracized by society. Voguing allowed these individuals to command respect and attention, creating an environment that celebrated diversity, personality, and above all, authenticity. Madonna's 1990 hit "Vogue" and the documentary "Paris is Burning" catapulted this underground dance style into the mainstream. These cultural products opened up voguing to a wider audience, introducing the intricate artistry of the dance and the importance of the ballroom scene.
