Slumber Tsogwane visited Orapa Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) to get an update on various community developments projects that Debswana implemented in 2021 and to appreciate the mine's 2022 community development plans for the Boteti region. His Honour, Tsogwane, commended OLDM General Manager, Mogakolodi Maoketsa for the great work he has done in ensuring that the mine makes a positive impact around its host communities. He also applauded Debswana for its contribution towards the fight against COVID-19 both at district and national level. He further urged Debswana to continue helping government in the implementation of the national beneficiation strategy and citizen economic empowerment. OLDM General Manager, Maoketsa assured the Acting President, of Debswana's unwavering commitment to working with communities to improve livelihoods.

JWANENG TOWN LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENTAL REGENERATION STRATEGY Botswana embraces sustainability as an integral part of her development approach and is fully committed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, its principles, goals, targets and indicators. Debswana Jwaneng Mine in partnership with Jwaneng Town Council set targets to address all environmental challenges as a collective and such include addressing cultural and social ills that include poor waste management often perpetuated by illegal dumping. Jwaneng Mine business partners signed a certificate of Commitment and engagement as a pledge to ensure that Jwaneng Town is clean and attractive. As thus, Jwaneng Town recently launched Environmental Regeneration Strategy and Jwaneng Mine General Manager handed over, to the Jwaneng Town Mayor, Her Worship Olga Ditsie, a Certificate of Commitment and Engagement signed by Jwaneng Mine business partners in support of the Jwaneng Environmental Regeneration Strategy. In her keynote address, at the launch Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, Philda Nani Kereng said that the initiative is in line with the Government of Botswana’s integrated waste management plan which emphasises on the development of value chains in recycling waste in order to open opportunities for the locals. In areas such as Jwaneng the development of recycling waste can be a key economic driver as more Batswana will be able to participate in creating more jobs. The minister also pointed out that if the strategy is implemented well, it will improve Jwaneng aesthetic and boost the town’s economic activities.

When sharing her Christmas message, Veronica Koolatotse (the wife to Mr Koolatotse Jwaneng Mine General Manager) said; “This is the season of generosity and there is no better feeling than making a difference, however small, to someone else’s life.” “I sincerely render my heartfelt and deepest appreciation for allowing us to share the magic of Christmas. For me as the Jwaneng Mine General Manager, I should lead by action in demonstrating our Show You Care value and make life brilliant commitment. It is imperative that we take time this festive and share the gift of love with our family, friends and community members”, said Mr Koolatotse Koolatotse when giving his Christmas message to Betesankwe community. Speaking at the event, Honourable Dr Lemogang Kwape urged Betesankwe youth to be passionate and work hard despite the current life challenges. Hon Dr Kwape pointed out that they should recognize that no matter how big or small, each person can make a difference in the world. He also showed his gratitude to the Koolatotse family for demonstrating kindness to Betesankwe community. In his appreciation remarks, Kgosi Kebaletile Thakoyakgomo of Betesankwe thanked the Koolatotse family for choosing to share the magic of festive with them. A special mention goes to Honourable Dr Lemogang Kwape, Ian Smith of Prolube Engineering, Pierre Hill of Komatsu and Bret Olaotse of Bret Engineering for also sharing the Christmas magic of giving with Betesankwe community. The event took place at Betesankwe Bodulo Jwa Morena Catholic Church and it started with benediction, followed by cultural games and musical rendition by top music artists in Botswana M.O.D and Empress Eunice. The day was full of laughter and love. Santa Claus showered attendees with some goodies.

OLDM COMMEMORATES TREE PLANTING DAY Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) today commemorated national tree planting day. Speaking at the commemoration, OLDM General Manager, Mogakolodi Maoketsa mentioned that as part of Debswana Building Forever Strategy, our vision is to be carbon neutral, minimise our water footprint and deliver a net positive impact on biodiversity. “Initiatives such as tree planting offset what has been removed, provide shade, provide medium for carbon capture,” he said. The theme for this year’s National Tree Planting Day is “Forest Restoration: A path to recovery and wellbeing”. #BuildingForever #OneDreamOneTeam

OLDM ADDS BWP1.4 MILLION MORE TO BOTETI COVID RESPONSE Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) donated Medical Personal Protective Equipment valued at BWP 1.4 million to Boteti District Health Management Team (DHMT) on Tuesday 14th December 2021. The PPE includes gloves, sanitizers, coveralls, masks, disinfectants, Test kits and Pulse oximeters. OLDM General Manager, Mogakolodi Maoketsa mentioned that the PPE would go a long way in supporting DHMT in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic particularly during this period, when there is a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases and the onset of the new COVID-19 variant of which much is unknown. Boteti Sub District Council Chairperson, Hon. Molemi Galeragwe applauded Debswana for this gesture noting that this was the not the first time Debswana donated, as the company has been supporting the District since the onset of covid-19 in Botswana in many respects.
