The Magnificent Shitta Mosque on Lagos Island. Circa:1961 Photo Credit: Harrison Forman Collection/University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries The eminent Businessman/ Philanthropist Mohammed Shitta aka ‘Olowo Pupa’ (the first Seriki Musulumi of Lagos)financed the construction of the landmark Shitta-Bey Mosque in 1891 at costs reported by various authors to be between £3000 and £7000. The mosque featured Afro-Brazilian themed architecture created by Senor Joao Baptista Da Costa, a Brazilian returnee to Lagos who was assisted by an indigenous builder named Sanusi Aka. Senor Da Costa also designed the Taiwo Olowo Monument in Lagos. The Shitta-Bey Mosque launched on 4 July 1894, at a ceremony presided over by the Governor of Lagos, Sir Gilbert Carter. Others in attendance included Oba Oyekan I, Edward Wilmot Blyden, Abdullah Quilliam (who represented Sultan Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire), and prominent Lagosian Christians such as James Pinson Labulo Davies, John Otunba Payne, and Richard Beale Blaize. Quilliam brought a letter accredited to the Sultan of Turkey asking Lagos Muslims to embrace Western education. Nigeria's Federal Minister of Health Dr. M.A Majekodummi. Date: 5/6/1963 Chief Moses Adekoyejo Majekodunmi C.F.R, C.M.G. born on the 17th of August 1916 . He was a Nigerian gynaecologist and obstetrician. He was also Minister of Health in the Nigerian First Republic. He studied at Abeokuta Grammar School, St. Gregory's College, Lagos, before proceeding to Trinity College Dublin where he earned a degree in Anatomy and Physiology in 1936. He also earned a 1st Class degree in Bacteriology and Clinical Medicine in 1940. In Ireland, he worked as in-house physician at the National Children's Hospital and the Rotunda Hospital from 1941 to 1942. In 1943, he joined the Federal Government Medical Services as a medical doctor and established his medical practice. He played key roles in the establishment of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and also founded Saint Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, which opened in March 1968. Chief Moses Adekoyejo Majekodunmi passed on into glory on the 11th of April 2012 (aged 95). The switchboard was an essential component of a manual telephone exchange, and was operated by switchboard operators who used electrical cords or switches to establish the connections. Telecommunications actually started in 1886 in Nigeria because of the need of the colonial government to connect with other colonial administration in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and England. One the left hand corner is the clock tower donated by the Syrian Community in Lagos. “In 1863, the Legislative Council decreed that vacant land behind Broad Street, in the heart of the commercial and administrative district, should be sold for £100 per acre, although the government sold land in Lagos as a whole for a mean price of £82 per acre between 1865 and 1869. A decade later the average price of vacant land sold by the government on Lagos is quadrupled to £328 per acre. In 1886, the governor on Lagos Island had quadrupled to £328 per acre. Two years later, the colonial surveyor priced good land facing the Marina and Broad Street at £490 per acre and reclaimed swamp land between the Marina and Broad Street at £490 per acre. Land with buildings on it fetched more, of course, particularly if they were solidly constructed. In 1879, a plot at Tinubu Square of only about one-twentieth of an acre, but with a substantial building on it, sold for £614. Later that year, an acre and one-tenth occupying “a commanding position” on the Marina and having two dwelling houses on it, one of them quite grand by local standards, sold for £3000. It was founded by Swiss traders that were affiliated with both Basel Trading Company and the Basel Mission and who wanted portions of their earnings to support the works of the mission. The traders already had business interest in India and Ghana prior to entering the Nigerian market. In Ghana, the group owned a thriving cocoa business before the beginning of World War I, years after the war, the group established its subsidiary in Nigeria in 1932. In Nigeria, the firm grew through acquisitions and trading, establishing various divisions including Dorman Long Nigeria, UTC Foods, Almagamated Metal Containers, HF Schroeder and a motors division. It increased importation of merchandise into Nigeria after World War II,during Nigeria's oil boom, UTC's revenues rose from 150 million francs to about 1.5 billion francs. But towards the end of the 1980s, UTC's profit began to slip. The Historical Landmark building was named after Hugh Trenchard  (3 February 1873 – 10 February 1956) He was a Marshal of the Royal Airforce in Nigeria, he was responsible for establishing the Royal Air Force. Also known as the "Father of the Royal Air Force" Circa 1955. The Building was designed by Fry Drew & Partners (Maxwell Dry and Jane Drew) British architect couple who also designed the Co-operative Bank Building in Ibadan, amongst many others. They also designed the entire campus of the University of Ibadan. The campus was built in two phases; the first phase was finished in the year 1955, and the second phase was completed in the 1960s after the independence of Nigeria. All inaugural lectures and ceremonial activities of the university of Ibadan are carried out in the hall. Initially, the carrier was a tripartite entity in which the Nigerian government was the major shareholder (51%), and Elder Dempster Lines and British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) held the balance (322⁄3 and 161⁄3, respectively). WAAC Nigeria inherited some aircraft previously owned by WAAC. Operations started on 1 October 1958, with a BOAC Boeing 377 Stratocruiser operated on behalf of the new airline linking London Heathrow with Lagos, and Douglas DC-3s flying domestic services and a run to Dakar, the last one in conjunction with Ghana Airways. The introduction of International Monetary Fund policies, along with corruption,mismanagement and overstaffing, led to a steady decline of Nigeria Airways from the 1980s.The carrier had accumulated significant debts that outstripped its revenues from the mid-1980s, to the extent that aircraft were detained or impounded for unpaid debts.
