A meeting that brings world leaders together to make real commitments towards tackling climate change (COP26) started at the beginning of the week. Here are some highlights of the progress that's been made so far: . 1. More than 40 countries have pledged to stop building new coal-fired power plants including Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, and Ukraine and phase out coal power in the 2030s for major economies and in the 2040s for the others. (Unfortunately, Australia, the worlds second-largest exporter of coal was not on this list). ​. 2. 100 nations and parties have signed on to a global pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% of 2020 levels by 2030. Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas with over 80 times more warming power than CO2 over a 20 year period. This commitment was paired with an announcement from Biden about U.S. regulations from the EPA that pushes oil and gas companies to enhance the monitoring, detection and repair of methane leaks. ​. 3. More than 100 leaders pledged to end deforestation by 2030. HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE DIRTY DOZEN?! ↠ According to the EWG these are the 12 fruits/veggies that contain high levels of various pesticides, even after washing, the list includes: 👉 Strawberries 👉 Spinach 👉 Kale, collard, and mustard greens 👉 Nectarines 👉 Apples 👉 Grapes 👉 Cherries 👉 Peaches 👉 Pears 👉 Bell and hot peppers 👉 Celery 👉 Tomatoes Hot tip: Anything with a thin skin that you typically eat rather than peel and discard is on this list—plus produce with lots of nooks and crannies, like curly kale, which is inherently difficult to wash. . If your heart sank when you saw some of your favourites on the list above (me 🙋‍♀️), rest assured that some of your other go-to's might be on the EWG's Clean Fifteen list. But that doesn’t mean washing isn't important at all, it's important to remove as much residual pesticides/bacteria/dirt off as possible. ​. ​HOW DO I AVOID PESTICIDES Obviously organic is the best way to go howeer we understand this isn't always easy for everyone so here are some other tips: ​1. Try growing the items on the dirty dozen at home, you can control exactly what lands on the produce! ​2. Try looking for 'spray-free', some farms are pretty much organic but they just haven't gained the certification yet ​3. They will power the stage production with renewable and low-emission energy, including: . ☀️ Solar: Solar tiles will be installed around the stadiums . 🛢️ Biofuels: Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel is recycled from waste cooking oils and can lower generator emissions by 90%. They will also use HVO to power their buses and trucks. . 🔋 Battery System: Thanks to their BMW partnership, they were able to develop a mobile rechargeable show battery. It's made from recycled BMW batteries and will be powered by renewable sources. . 🕺 Kinetic Energy: This has to be the coolest one!! They will install a kinetic flooring system across the stadiums that convert dancing movements into energy that helps power the show. They'll also have electricity-generating bikes that people can choose to ride to actively charge the battery mentioned above! Tell me that's not cool?! . 💨 Grid renewables: Wherever available, they will use mains power from 100% renewable sources, which is why they are starting the tour in Costa Rica, where 99% of mains power is renewable. .
