TODAY'S RESCUE—SENIOR DOG SUFFERING FROM SEVERE ANAEMIA AND HEAT STROKE This afternoon, ACT received a message about a dog lying paralysed at the side of a road. Because of foaming at the mouth, the immediate concern was that the stray had been poisoned. An ACT rescuer rushed to the scene and immediately took her to a nearby veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. There, blood tests revealed that the old dog was covered in ticks, very anaemic, and in urgent need of a blood transfusion. She was also severely dehydrated but couldn't receive fluids, as this would cause her to become even more anaemic. So our rescuer drove the old girl into Taipei to a vet hospital equipped to give blood transfusions. She was wearing a chain collar but no microchip has been found. We'll try to find if she has an owner and determine if she would be better off in ACT care. Taiwan gets very hot in summer, and temperatures today reached 38º C (100.4º F) today. All the dogs and cats in ACT care get a raw diet, which, as well as being highly nutritious, helps keep them hydrated, as it has a high moisture content and produces only dry stools. Stray dogs are often fed dry pellets which not only provide no fluids but also dehydrate the poor animal and take fluids out with the stools. Dehydrating dogs with kibble is a health risk at any time but especially during hot weather. We'll have more updates tomorrow. Fingers crossed the blood transfusion goes well. JIUJIU UPDATE: We’re pleased to report that JiuJiu is recovering well after surgery to remove his badly needed inured leg. The friendly stray had fallen victim to one of the thousands of illegal wire snares that plague the Taiwan countryside. The ACT care staff say he’s settling in very well, enjoying the healthy raw diet, and is proving to be very friendly to everyone, despite the suffering he’s been through. ACT received a call about a cat to the southeast of Taipei who was in urgent need of help. His mouth was showing signs of severe inflammation and he was drooling and weak. When we see stray cats like this, our first guess is that they’re suffering from FIV. He was also very thin. Luckily, the black-and-white feline was hungry enough to go straight into our baited humane trap—but his mouth issues prevented him eating. Now able to examine him more closely, our rescuer noticed that one of the stray cat’s back legs had several festering wounds, and much of his hind end was covered in sticky residue of glue. He rushed the little guy to one of our vets in Taipei, where it was determined he was indeed suffering from FIV, and also very dehydrated. As he was unable to eat, the vets gave him intravenous fluids to help stabilise his condition. He’ll be treated for all his ailments and has already been cleaned up. We’ve named him TongXin. Cats with FIV do very well at The Cats’ Cradle, our home for rescues cats. We feed raw food for superior nutrition, cats are taken to the vet at the first sign of illness, and TongXin will be kept away from unfriendly cats—the only way FIV can spread to other cats is from deep puncture wounds, so ACT never euthanises such cats but instead gives them quality care until we can rehome them (or we let them stay forever). Yesterday afternoon, ACT received a report of a dog hobbling around with his front-right leg badly injured by one of the thousands of cruel trapping devices that plague the otherwise beautiful Taiwan countryside. Our rescue team set off immediately to rescue the stray so he could receive urgent veterinary attention. The rescue was very quick and easy thanks to the people who told us about his plight: they cornered the suffering canine and, together with our rescuer, were able to secure the nervous dog by slipping a leash over his head. The black stray was immediately put into a travel crate and transported to one of our vets in Taipei City. JiuJiu has already undergone surgery to amputate his rotten paw, leaving him now a tripod but still able to walk, run, and play once he's healthy and fully recovered from his ordeal. He has also been vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered, and undergone a full health exam, including blood tests. Macy has been at ACT cofounder's house for two long months. That’s two months of waiting for her turn to be chosen for adoption; four months of seeing her friends go home while she wonders why not her; two months of foster home. Ordinary: I am an ordinary cat. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I purr. I climb. I hunt. I groom myself. I guess. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary cats don't get chased by passersby for no reason. I know ordinary cats don't get brought in a humane trap to the vet to be put under heat lamps to warm my body. If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal life with humans I could call family. I would wish I could live another day without suffering. Here's what I think; the only reason I am not ordinary is that no one else saw me like family; just another stray. But I got kind of used to being a stray. I know how to pretend I don't see the faces people make. We've all gotten pretty good at that sort of thing: me and many passersby. Actually, I take that back: the kind young couple who spotted me yesterday were not so good at it. They got really concerned about my condition and made sure I was rescued by ACT. For once I felt e x t r a o r d i n a r y and worthy of a second chance. The humans from ACT gave me a name, they named me Tiger. I won't describe what I've gone through. Whatever you are thinking, It's probably worse. The very same day I got rescued, I was brought to the vet to try to find out, why I was bleeding through my mouth. Since I've never been to a vet clinic before, I was pretty much totally and completely petrified. While at the vet, feeling very hopeful to be loved, the vet called ACT's co-founder to tell her to expect the worst. My blood test showed very elevated values that indicate kidney failure, and my red blood cells were really low because of all the blood loss. (Continued)

This gorgeous Beauty has just one wish before Valentine's day: to find a home. This young friendly female is about as close to perfect as you can get. Beauty is perfect on leash and at home, is a good cuddler, and very easy to care for. She loves being close to you. A perfect day for her, one she’s been dreaming about since she arrived, would include lots of walks and a long nap in a comfy bed. As is typical for young pups in sanctuaries, is that other dogs don’t like her. She’s currently alone in one of our smaller gardens at The New deN, but she deserves to be with her own little family.
