At the airport about to go on our two week summer holiday. It’s rare that I totally switch off. But I’ve decided to hang up my “out of office sign” and resist the old FOMO. Riona and I have shot a new parody which will probably drop while I’m away, I hope you like it, it’s one of my favourites we’ve ever done. For the first leg of our holiday we are heading back to London and I’m so looking forward to catching up with old friends, having a (vegetarian) pub lunch, walking in the Heath and seeing our house. A few nights ago a (male) friend mentioned how women are less likely to ask for a raise or for a promotion at work than men are. He mentioned that he encourages his wife to ask for what she deserves at work and as I listened to him I realised that while he was totally aware of the fact women (generally speaking) feel the need to be liked more than men do and so hesitate to “rock the boat” at work, because that’s what we are taught to do. He also didn’t seem aware of the fact that those who dare ask are often labelled as pushy, bossy and worse. In short, he had no idea WHY. I guess the subtle, subliminal messages women and girl receive (literally from birth) go above men heads. But rest assure they are out there, everywhere - in the cartoons we watched as children, the games we played, the clothes we wore… politics, education, the media… you name it. Women and girls are in fact taught to be nice, polite, demure… small. While boys are encouraged to be bold, brave and big. This 100% has an effect on how women behave in the workplace. How less likely we are to ask for more money, for promotions and for what we are worth. it’s obviously not the only thing but it’s one more thing to add to the pile and I thought this conversation was important. The other interesting thing is that once you open your eyes to the gender stereotypes in our culture it’s hard to not see them. I’m hoping things are changing for the better. I see some change, especially amongst young people who are rejecting gender roles altogether. We still have a long way to go of course but every step is something. Even conversations like the one I had with my dear friend is a step in the right direction. So let’s keep having them 🙏🏻 #love TAG A FRIEND ❤️
