EMMETT SPARLING 🌎 TRAVEL

This was the first photo of mine that was “internationally recognized”. This image got runner up for the Young Astronomy Photographer of the year award from the Royal Greenwich Observatory in the UK. I took it in 2014 (two years after I had first picked up a camera and become obsessed with photography). That’s my dad in the frame- I convinced him to come be in my photo one night after dinner.

I like to think of the landscape image as the “big moment” and everything else leading up to that moment as the “in between moments”. I try to focus on capturing as many in between moments as possible because those images are often what tell the story.

I have so many, but here are a few that come to mind first. 1. An absolutely insane sunrise on our last day in Borneo. Right after this sunrise, we swam for 3 hours with 7 whale sharks in a feeding frenzy around a bait ball of fish. (With @chelseakauai) 2. My last birthday party with most of my best friends all in one place. 3. Camping on Nusa Penida during an extremely wet thunderstorm. We were attacked by monkeys and @josiahwg forgot all our food.

Hey friends, on July 29th I’m having an art show opening party at the Hearth Gallery on Bowen island. It’s a FREE event and everyone is welcome! Lots of people in the industry will be there so it’s a good opportunity for networking. I’ll be there from 6-9:30pm talking about my work and answering questions (I’m also doing a gallery walk through talking about the story behind each image at 8:15). At 7pm, we’re having the first screening of the Desert Knight short film that we shot in Oman.

Current projects on the go: - Desert Knight Short Film Finishing the colour grading with Craig Harris and minor VFX with Brendan Henry. - Desert Knight BTS film Interviewing most of the crew for that next Tuesday hopefully. @conormccann was shooting BTS during the whole project. - River Watch, a short film for @corona Finishing up final edits and sound design. - Mo’orea Ocean Scientists, a short film for @corona Doing a bit of a re-edit, changing some voiceover, etc. - Art Show Prep

Currently under a blanket (so it’s nice and dark) reviewing colour grading for @josiahwg and I’s short film “the Desert Knight”. So excited to release this unbelievably ambitious and slightly dumb project 🫡

After a 8 hour flight, followed by a 5 hour flight, followed by a 3 hour speedboat ride in open ocean, we made it to Ua Pou in the Marquesas islands, French Polynesia. Ua Pou is known as the cathedral island because of its monolithic peaks that tower over the jungle.

Wildlife in black & white is so calming to look at. I love the simplicity that allows you to focus on the every detail of the animal. Tap on each image to get the full quality! Happy to answer questions about the photos in the comments :)

Anyone else’s Instagram not loading anything?

Two adolescent humpback whales off the coast of Mo’orea, French Polynesia. The whale with its belly up is a young male swimming laps around the other, trying to impress it. These two were flirting in the water around us for a few brief moments before swimming off into the depths. Humpback whales in French Polynesia migrate to the region to breed and give birth. French Polynesia's warm waters and lagoons provide an ideal habitat for these whales during their reproductive season.
