Critics’ Picks @artforum "Melike Kara turns dozens of pictures from her Kurdish family album into a sprawling floor installation in “Emine’s Garden,” named in honor of the artist’s grandmother. Spanning three exhibition spaces in the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, the work takes the idea of the garden literally. Overgrown with plaster flowers and enigmatic ornaments inspired by Kurdish weaving, the images coalesce into variegated patterns beneath our feet, forming a secluded sanctuary that nevertheless invites the visitor to participate by roaming another person’s recollections." @melike_kara @kunsthallesanktgallen July 8, 2023 - October 15, 2023 Words by Vojin Saša Vukadinović

Currently on view in our Berlin gallery: ‚The Becoming: A Window of the Self,‘ a group exhibition curated by Joseph Awuah-Darko, at our Berlin gallery. Across a range of media including painting, photography, collage, sculpture, and tapestry, the works of Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, Maku Azu, Ousmane Bâ, and Joseph Awuah-Darko unfurl a multifarious exploration of the self, that extends far beyond the traditional bounds of self-portraiture. Whether engaging with abstraction, figuration, Surrealism, or Afro-futurism, the artists address the fluidity of selfhood and the multiplicity of identity by interlacing personal histories and cultural legacies. In The Becoming: A Window of the Self, self-discovery occurs through encountering the other, appropriating ancestral or nonnative techniques, and grappling with wider societal constructs.
