#career | In the past, I had worked for companies where dreams go to die. They forbid employees from having side hustles or any creative outlets while putting road blocks and glass ceilings to advancement goals. If your employees have the ambition, dedication and commitment to work on a side hustle after a day of work, let them! Conflict of interest? Make them sign a non-compete and NDA. Scared they will leave? Killing their dreams won’t make them stay. What if you have big dreams and multiple passions? In this season, I am grateful to have found multiple side hustles and passions, and being able to pursue them on my terms. Don’t be afraid to take the leap of faith. Today, the way I measure company culture and whether we have a fit, is how acceptable and supportive they are of my professional and personal goals. It has to be a two-way street. Hi friends! Taking a different approach with this account where I’ll focus more on sharing tips and advice about all things career, entrepreneurship, networking, community building, life as a career mom and everything in between. Growing up I didn’t have a role model or someone I looked up to career-wise but thanks to social media today, I am inspired and encouraged by so many fellow career moms and modern women who do it all, and with love. If this speaks to you, I look forward to sharing this journey with you. MY CAREER PATH: I majored in political science and worked in public policy for a few years before going to law school and worked at a prestigious firm before realizing it wasn’t for me. I was so lost and defeated then because being a lawyer was all I ever wanted to be. I quit my job and left for Asia (Bali) for a month with no plans to come back to. Thankfully, I started networking very early and building my network and thanks to the many mentors and good friends I had met along the way, I pivoted my career to corporate PR (started from the bottom with a massive pay cut!) working at one of Canada’s largest PR firms. When the corporate setting had started to wear on me, I left Montreal for Toronto. I worked in-house for two nonprofits (one in Canadian TV and the other was a tech organization) before starting my own consulting agency in 2019. 5 years in, we provide our expertise and services to a number of clients in the nonprofit and social impact sector across the GTA. Look for a trip to the city the other day. Fun fact: When I was living and working downtown Toronto, I used to walk over an hour to work and back everyday and hated it.
