I give you full permission to play with your food!! Yes, get sticky and get in there, because shots like this don’t just happen, trust me 😏. This shot took loads of swirling, scooping and swishing with the back of a spoon ⛷(and goes without saying…tons of finger licking) to achieve a swirl that makes the eye follow it around, is comfortable to look at, has flat sections to show off the smoothness and deep sections to show the thickness and viscosity of this gorgeous caramel. Then, there is the positioning with the light to bring out the contrast especially the highlights, because caramel has to SHINE 🌟. . What to make when surrounded by some of the best produce in the world 🤔🤔🤔 - coffee shakes of course!! Being a coffee freak and having a tub of delicious Jersey ice-cream in the freezer, well, let’s just say it was a match made in heaven 😇. . I’m still playing with the light in the new studio, last week was sunny and bright, this week not so…which is okay, as that’s the light I’m used to and prefer working with. I’m settling into my new studio, I honestly was not aware of how many props I own until I started to pack, and worst unpack and find a space for all of them 🙈🙈🙈. . Moving studios is tricky, besides the size difference there is a lighting difference. As we all know, lighting is super important for a good shot, so learning to work with the ambient lighting as a natural light photographer takes time and effort. It’s important to take the time to play around with window dressings, diffusers or even bounce cards to learn how to manipulate that light perfectly. This shot was taken at midday and the sunlight is very strong into my studio. I’ve put up muslin curtains to diffuse the light as it’s just way too strong at the moment, although this will change during winter when I will need to supplement my natural light using a @rotolight. This peeps, is why it takes time as I will need to explore the changes in my light during the seasons and year. . Instead of phaffing around with fancy food that could change or melt in this heat, I kept it simple with some store bought meringues, so that I didn’t have to worry about what was happening to my food, giving me the chance to purely focus on mastering the light. . Yeah finally we have summer and…it’s an ice-cream and chocolate sauce kinda day!! . So, I’m finally up and running in my studio and I’ve been spending time just playing around in and working with my “new” light in my new space (check our my stories for bts). It’s always important to find the best angles and positions for your lighting, this takes time without the pressure of a client breathing down your neck. This week is pure exploration in so many ways. Finding the best spots in my studio, finding new suppliers of ingredients and produce and working on getting my name and work out into a new environment….so much new happening 🤗. . .
