Only a few days to discover the work of Farah Al Qasimi at the Sharjah Biennial
Only a few days to discover the work of Farah Al Qasimi at the Sharjah Biennial 15! Relayed across various locations in Ras Al Khaimah, Farah Al Qasimi film’s Um Al Dhabab (Mother of Fog) (2023) contests the myth perpetuated by the British Empire and western academia of Al Qasimi tribeinstigated piracy in the Gulf. Through the perspectives of the ghost of an Al Qasimi pirate and a British naval officer, the film recounts the 1819 siege of Al Dhayah fort and the subsequent peace-brokering treaty. The work challenges western-centric historiographies of the Gulf and the lingering imperialist interests at play across Asia’s trade hub, while also weaving in contemporary interpretations of pirate culture. Farah Al Qasimi (@frequentlyaskedquestion )originating from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, lives between Dubai and New York Her works explore how consumer culture seduces people, particularly women, with promises of beauty and self-improvement. Her practice moves fluidly between private and public spheres, but its content has remained primarily focused on locating the fantastic in the everyday. Working primarily with photography, video and performance, Farah Al Qasimi examines postcolonial structures of power, gender and taste in the Gulf Arab states. We had the privilege of featuring her powerful video artwork as part of Asia NOW 2022, the within the video program “Gulf Futurism" (Concept developed by the artist Sophia Al Maria and Fatima Al Qadiri in 2013.) - proposed and curated by @odileburluraux , senior curator @museedartmodernedeparis , a selection of videos by women artists from West Asia that explored the cultural, sociopolitical, and environmental questions that affect the Persian Gulf region. This selection featured video works by: Sarah Abu Abdallah, Ahaad Al Amoudi, Sophia Al Maria, Monira Al Qadiri, Farah Al Qasimi, Sama Alshaibi, and Larissa Sansou 📸1: ‘Um Al Dhabaab (Mother of Fog)’ at Sharjah Biennale 📸2: ‘Um Al Dhabaab (Mother of Fog)’ at Sharjah Biennale 📸3: Farah Al Qasimi 📸4: " General Behavior, 2020," Courtesy of the artist and @thethirdlinedxb

🔥 Only a few days left to discover @reenakallat’s artworks at the @sharjahart Biennial 15, 2023! 🕊 Chorus, 2017 and Chorus I, 2015-2019 are sculptures modeled after pre-radar devices employed as early warning systems during World War lI to detect the engine sounds of enemy aircraft. The artist replaces the war soundscape with the song of the national birds of neighboring nation-states with hostile, turbulent histories (Israel-Palestine, UK-Ireland, India-Pakistan and USA-Mexico). Singing in unison, the birds resist their appropriation as symbols of singular national affiliation. Kallat’s works draw attention to universal truths to subvert the underpinnings of conflicts. “In these polarised times where the gaps in our understanding of the truth is increasingly widening, I hope we can still find some space to reflect upon our own shortcomings in understanding other perspectives and move beyond the many borders, visible and invisible, to recognise our interdependence,” says Kallat. 👉 Her work was presented by the gallery @naturemorte_delhi at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques Guimet, as a part of the program of Asia Now Paris 2020 L’Asie Maintenant. The exhibition presented Kallat's large-scale immersive installation 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰-𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰-𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰-𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰, a work composed of textual scrolls rendered using the tie and dye fabric process. The scrolls present the preambles of the constitutions of countries politically partitioned or in conflict. These are the constitutions of India and Pakistan, the US and Cuba, Serbia and Croatia, Sudan and South Sudan, Bangladesh and India, China and Japan, North and South Korea, adopted by their citizens as a promise to themselves in creating nations where justice, liberty, equality and fraternity would prevail. 📸1: “Chorus, 2017” 📸2: “Chorus I, 2015-2019” 📸3: “Verso-Recto-Recto-Verso” @reenakallat @museeguimet #NatureMorte #ReenaSainiKallat #AsiaNow #Exhibition #ContemporaryArt #ContemporaryArtist #Art #Artist #Artwork #SouthAsianArt #southasianartist @naturemorte_delhi #museenationaldesartsasiatiques

Congratulations Izumi Kato! Welcome back for your third solo exhibition at the Perrotin Gallery in Paris. On this occasion, the artist presents a new collection of sculptures and paintings populated by hybrid creatures from her unique artistic universe. The exhibition is on view until July 29th. ‘The totemic immobility of Izumi Kato's painted and sculpted works is strikingly melancholic. These figures are endless questions, beyond any specific place or time, as Japanese as they are ours, wherever we are.’ -Sophie Makariou From children with disturbing faces and embryos with fully developed limbs, to the spirits of ancestors trapped in amorphous bodies, the creatures brought together by Izumi Kato are as fascinating as they are enigmatic. Their anonymous silhouettes are strange and unintelligible; their featureless faces merely bold colours arranged in simple forms. The creatures' elemental representation, with elliptical heads and deep, unfathomable eyes, is reminiscent of primitive arts. Their expressions recall totems and the animistic belief that a spiritual force flows through the living as well as the mineral world. The aura emitted by these characters seems to manifest the first rumblings of life, while the intensity of their expression grants us access to an understanding of humankind founded on intuition rather than reason. Embodying a universal, primitive form of humanity, these mystical beings invite their viewers to identify with them, as if looking into a mirror. @perrotin @izukat692 📸1: Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery 📸2: Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery 📸3 :Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery 📸4: Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery 📸5: Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery 📸6: Untilted, 2023 courtesy the artist and Perrotin Gallery #IzumiKato #PerrotinParis #Perrotin

“How to express the fullness of life through its emptiness, how to express its emptiness through its fullness? The Japanese artist comes to trap all types of ghosts between her thousand interwoven threads. Her spidery webs are thus so many memories.” — Excerpt from the article in Beaux-Arts by Emmanuelle Lequeux. « Memory under the Skin" is on view untill July 22 at Templon gallery in Paris. The exhibition features multiple installations focusing on human existence. The memory of one own skin can be never washed away as our existence remains in the clothing and objects that surround us when we die. "This is one of the themes of my work, the existence in the absence”. In addition, the show features multiple objects, drawings and canvases. With" Memory under The Skin", Chiharu Shiota once again explores one of her favourite themes: clothing as “second skin”. She explains that clothes “can even be more important than skin because they offer the opportunity to express so much about each of us. They say more than a person’s skin colour, age or nationality. They are always with us in our daily life, becoming the personification of our memories, our existence. When we die, our existence is reflected by our clothes and the objects we surround ourselves with. In 2021, we were thrilled to welcome a major installation by Chiharu Shiota with Templon Gallery at Asia Now, as a metaphor of our lives under lockdown. 📸1: Letters of Love, 2022, installation ©️ Doug Eng 📸2: Memory under the Skin, 2023 courtesy the artist and Templon gallery 📸3: Memory Under the Skin , 2023 courtesy the artist and Templon gallery 📸4: Exhibition View at Asia NOW @chiharushiota @galerietemplon #chiharushiota #memoryundertheskin #contemporaryart #templon #galerietemplon

Aki Hassans’ inaugural solo exhibition “Entangled Attachments” is on view in Singapour at @yeoworkshop until 18 June 2023. The Singaporean visual artist whose work is concerned by the varying forms of dependencies evolved within kinships, tracing through their terms of non-conformity, love, change, solidarity and survival. Primarily working through sculptural installations and experimental comics, Aki speculates on nonbinary bodily (con)sequences, as they reflect on the present dilemmas with cultural and systemic forces. Aki Hassan was recently commissioned for their sculpture ‘Grounding Points: Settled and Settling In’, presented as part of a two-year public art trail initiated by Singapore Art Museum. Some of the artist’s recent residencies include Cutes/ظِراف with Samandal and Nino Bulling as part of Documenta 15 (2022) and SAM Art Residencies at Singapore Art Museum (2021/22). Recent exhibitions include RSA New Contemporaries 2022 (Royal Scottish Academy, 2022), innate (Yeo Workshop, 2021), An Exercise of Meaning in a Glitch Season (National Gallery Singapore, 2020), Pig Rock Bothy Residency & Exhibition (Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, 2019) and Show Me The Difference (Studio for an Art Lover, Glasgow 2019). Last year, Yeo Workshop presented a selection of recent works by Southeast Asian artists @weilengt , @citrasasmita_work , @quynhdong2464 and @priyageetha.dia at the 8th edition of ASIA NOW, Paris. The presentation aimed at showcasing female artists who approach contemporary art in very diverse ways based on their personal experiences, cultural heritage and art education. 📸1:"Our gesture pulse through one another", 2023 courtesy the artist and Yeo Workshop gallery 📸2: " A distant memory", 2023 courtesy the artist and Yeo Workshop gallery 📸3: "Don't fall",2023 courtesy the artist and Yeo Workshop gallery 📸4: Exhibition View of "Entangled Attachments" courtesy the artist and Yeo Workshop gallery 📸5: "Grounding Points: Settled and Settling In" 📸6: Exhibition View at Asia NOW 📸7: Priyageetha Dia: "we.remain.in.multiple.motions_Malaya", 2022 @akihassans #Sculpture#queersolidarity#queerkinship #singaporeanartist #installation

Sensational ! the group exhibition: "A new sensation" is now on view at @galeriemarguo, curated by @henryrelph . “A new exhibition spotlights some of the most exciting young artists based in Britain. The twist? It’s happening in Paris. It is no secret that, post Brexit, Paris is taking giant canvas-sized bites out of London’s position as capital of the European art world."- @luxthemagazine The artists featured in "A New Sensation", either born or came of age in the 1990s, growing up in a rapidly evolving world marked by climate change, the acceleration of time and contraction of space due to advancements in technology, and resurgences of conservatism and nationalism, among other things. Today's reality is hypermediated by the production, exchange, and consumption of images; the fully realized society of the spectacle that Guy Debord warned of, in which "all that was once directly lived has become mere representation". The exhibition is on view until June 17th, 2023, at Galerie Marguo, featuring works by @jamiu.agboke , @lydiablakeley , @laszlovondohnanyi @korominami , @plum_black_field @sophialoebstudio @freyadouglasmorris @sofianifora @jamesowens_ @j_prapaithong @joshua_raz @jilltate_ @smavi @georg.kitty Last year, Galerie Marguo presented a solo show of Korean artist @yang_semine, which included a suite of new paintings from her Dragonfly series. Immerse yourself in the large-scale paintings of @thuvantranart , showcased in the exhibition 'Avant l'Orage' at the @boursedecommerce - Pinault Collection, Paris, on view until September 2023. Thu Van Tran’s work deals with the idea of contaminated bodies, spaces and imaginaries. The "Colors of Grey", installed in the space like a grandiose and melancholic landscape, refers to the colours of the dioxins used by the American army during Vietnam war, when toxic spraying caused the destruction of tropical forests. The stain of 'Penetrable', created in situ, echoes the moral imprint of the building a bastion of colonial trade in the late nineteenth century seemingly marking the architecture with the trace of a persistent wound Born in 1979 in Vietnam, Thu-Van Tran graduated from les Beaux-Arts in Paris where she lives and works. From her studies at the Fonderie Coubertin des Compagnons du devoir, she maintains a particular relationship with traditional techniques. However, her practice is based on the use of a variety of mediums: painting, sculpture, drawing, film, site-specific installations, and more. In 2021 Thu Van Tran’s installation « Faits du même bois » "Made of the same wood» was featured at the @museeguimet, curated by @kathyalliou , as part of « l’Asie Maintenant » program proposed by Asia NOW. Built through the prism of her double culture, of the colonial history which links her two countries, and of the generalized systems of exploitation of man and nature in across the globalized world, in the heritage and living heart of the museum, where Buddhist ceremonies were organized by Mr. Guimet. A rubber tree board, some bronze banana leaves littering the ground, like so many traces or vestiges of human action in the forests of Asia, just as much a reintroduction of their presence, of their spirit within the museum. Thu Van Tran also showcased her work in the group exhibition 'Making Worlds Exist,' curated by Kathy Alliou, at Asia NOW. The exhibition was supported by @sisleyparisofficial 📸1-4: Thu-Van Tran with her work, Les Couleurs du gris, 2022 courtesy the artist and @alminerech 📸5: Exhibition View of "Making Worlds Exist" at Asia NOW 2021

Odonchimeg Davaadorj's solo exhibition "IN BETWEEN" is on view until June 3rd at Backslash gallery in Paris. The exhibition was inspired by filmmaker Agnès Varda wrote: "If we opened people up, we would find landscapes.” Davaadorj recognises herself in this poetic idea of an inner landscape, spiritual intimacy and each person’s innermost nature. The representation she proposes does not set out to describe, in the strict sense of the word, but instead imparts the plurality of emotions experienced by a being. These representations evoke the alchemy that operates in bodies to transform the energies circulating within us. Adopting an approach inextricably entwined with nature, the artist conjures the inner journeys of souls and the very essence of existence. In 2021, Odonchimeg Davaadorj showcased her work for the group exhibition "Making Worlds Exist" curated by Kathy Alliou at Asia NOW, the exhibition was supported by Sisley. 📸1 : Odonchimeg Davaadorj with her work 📸2: Exhibition View of "IN BETWEEN" Photos : ©️ Jérôme Michel 📸3: Exhibition View of "IN BETWEEN" Photos : ©️ Jérôme Michel 📸4: Exhibition View of "IN BETWEEN" Photos : ©️ Jérôme Michel 📸5: Exhibition View of "Making Worlds Exist" at Asia NOW 2021 @odonchimeg.davaadorj @backslashgallery @kathyalliou @sisleyparisofficial #backslashgallery #aquarelle #spirit #soul #nature #painting #contemporarypainting

Plunge into the work of the internationally renowned Korean painter, Kim Tschang
Plunge into the work of the internationally renowned Korean painter, Kim Tschang-Yeul (1929-2021) with « Drops and Strokes », on view at Musee Cernushi in Paris, with the support of Almine Rech Gallery. It was in Paris, where he settled after his American stay and remained until returning to Korea in 2013, that he developed the vocabulary for which he is known today all over the world: the trompe-l’oeil representation of waterdrops. This exhibition is dedicated to this motif and its importance in Kim Tschang-Yeul's work. If this element, by virtue of its omnipresence, has captured the public’s attention, it is often accompanied by the more or less discreet presence of Chinese characters in the background of each work. These writings recall the dual possible reading of creations that are anchored in both the developments of a partly globalized art and in Asian culture. In the early 1970s, liquids became the focus of Kim Tschang-Yeul's work, as they appeared to seep out of imaginary openings in his compositions. This motif transformed into hyperrealistic representations of falling waterdrops in 1972, establishing the foundation of his vocabulary. From then on, these waterdrops became trompe-l’oeil representations, laid simply on the canvas without a primer, and repetition was used to neutralize the artist's ego and dissolve suffering. Their layout, number, shape, and possible moisture traces became the key elements conveying variety in Kim Tschang-Yeul's art. We were thrilled to welcome Almine Rech’ featuring Kim Tschang-Yeul’s solo show at Asia NOW while the artist was still alive as one of the highlights of the fair. 📸 1 Kim Tschang-Yeul : Waterdrop (1973)©️ Paris Musées / Musée Cernuschi ©️ Kim Tschang-Yeul / Adagp 📸 2 Kim Tschang-Yeul : « Récurrence » (2008) ©️ Paris Musées / Musée Cernuschi ©️ Kim Tschang-Yeul / Adagp 📸 3 Kim Tschang-Yeul « Newspaper » (1986) ©️ Paris Musées / Musée Cernuschi ©️ Kim Tschang-Yeul / Adagp 📸 4 Portrait of Kim Tschang-Yeul ©️ Oan Kim / MYOP @kim.tschangyeul @museecernuschi @kimtschangyeulartmuseum @alminerech #KimTschangYeul #LaGoutteEtLeTrait #MuséeCernuschi #CernuschiMuseum #parismusees #parismuseum
