Today is World Gorilla Day. There are just 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the world per the most recent census. It is believed that 604 of them inhabit the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanoes that spreads across the borders of Rwanda, the DRC and Uganda. Rwanda uses a collaborative conservation model that includes every facet of society to tackle the complex threats to the survival of these gorillas. Chief among these threats is loss of habitat, snares and the spread of disease, all of which are caused by the pressures of a rapidly growing population encroaching on the national park.  But sensible initiatives are helping to reduce human-animal conflict and foster understanding. These include limited, high-cost trekking permits and a tourism-revenue-sharing model that puts profits into the hands of the communities, most of whom are subsistence farmers. The milestone expansion of Volcanoes National Park is intended to benefit everyone, adding 23% more habitat and a larger buffer zone for the growing gorilla population. It will also create an estimated 1,700 jobs, and all those residing within the current buffer zone will be compensated and relocated to newly constructed “green” villages, complete with health services, schools and green belts for farming. It’s a massive undertaking but, as Volcanoes National Park Chief Warden Prosper Uwingeli has reminded us, “the spirit of working together is amazing in Rwanda. The plan to expand Volcanoes National Park will catalyze many conservation and community benefits for a long time.”  None of this progress would be possible without responsible, respectful, conscious tourism – the foundation upon which ROAR AFRICA is built. Lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, and 500+ bird species thrive in Akagera National Park, but that wasn’t the case just a decade ago. After the Rwanda genocide, the park became a haven for thousands of refugees, park management fell apart, and deforestation & poaching was rampant. Central Africa’s largest wetland and the remainder of this diverse habitat and wildlife population needed help. In 2010, the Rwandan Development Board joined forces with African Parks and put in place an emergency conservation plan. Cracking down on poaching, rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, re-introducing wildlife, training hundreds of rangers, and showing locals the benefits of stewardship, the park has turned an unbelievable new leaf. Today, wildlife populations are up 140%, with over 12,000 animals calling Akagera home! We saw the abundance of wildlife firsthand as we took a boat safari around Lake Ihema and did an all-day game drive from the wetland to the park’s northern savannah. Zebras caused traffic jams, hippos cuddled up in the shallow waters, a pride of lions moved through the grasses, mama giraffes nursed their spindly legged babies, cape buffalo rolled 50-deep, and baboons were at every turn. We saw three of the park's Big Five species…and we have no doubt we’ll find them all next time we come to Akagera! #VisitRwanda #partner @visitrwanda_now
