Gallery owner Emilio Mazzoli had invited the 21-year-old New York artist to produce new works on site for a solo exhibition. Within a few days, Basquiat painted eight large-format canvases, some of them now among his most celebrated and valuable works. "The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration.” – Claude Monet The focus of our current collection display is on the different ways in which artists from Impressionism to the present have engaged with the natural world. The exhibition comprises around forty works, and is supplemented by a display of paintings by Robert Ryman from the Daros Collection. Our views and notions of nature have changed in the past 100 years. A picture by Monet is filled with happiness: it shows nature as unspoiled and reflects the gaze of the artist who conceived his garden as a haven whose fragility he may have already sensed. Such a largely untroubled view has become nigh on impossible today—our knowledge of nature’s woundedness and endangerment looms far too large. The artists featured in “THE MIND’S EYE. Images of Nature from Claude Monet to Otobong Nkanga” have produced images of nature that visualise both these perspectives. The contemporary view is more complex and less carefree, yet it is no less wonderful. Immerse yourself into the touching work of this exceptional artist and visit our current exhibition "Doris Salcedo" at Fondation Beyeler! Over a number of years, Colombian artist Doris Salcedo gathered shoes belonging to disappeared persons. The shoe stands in for the human body, operating as a trace of the person whose foot once shaped it. As an isolated item, it symbolises loss – its own or that of its owner. The title of the series, “Atrabiliarios” (1992-2004), derives from the Latin “atrabilis”, used to describe the melancholy associated with mourning. Even though their personal stories remain undisclosed, the reliquary-like display emphasises the special significance of the individual. By means of unusual associations of objects and combinations of seemingly contradictory materials meticulously worked by hand, Salcedo manages to portray violence and suffering without showing them explicitly. The evocative titles of her works, oftentimes referring to poetry, endow them with an additional, verbal plane of meaning. The exhibition “Doris Salcedo” is on display from until 17 September, 2023. Sound Garden – it’s on! This summer, the pavilion area in Fondation Beyeler’s museum park will fill every Wednesday evenings with contemporary beats and sounds, starting next week on 28 June. Come and chill with cool drinks in a beautiful outdoor setting to music by regional, national, and international acts. From jazz, samba, and hip-hop to neo-soul and Afro-beat – the "Sound Garden" offers a varied program of music for a relaxing mid-week evening in the museum park, with opportunities to discover new favorite performers and tracks. Let’s kick off this year’s “Sound Garden” with the fantastic @femergycollective from Berlin. The concerts in the series take place on Wednesdays from June 28 to August 30, 2023 in the Fondation Beyeler park, starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Entrance is free of charge and no advance booking is required. New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) and the Fondation Beyeler are connected by a long common history. As early as 1983, soon after Basquiat’s initial successes as an artist, Ernst Beyeler invited the young painter to contribute to a group exhibition titled “Expressive Malerei nach Picasso” at his legendary gallery in Basel. Furthermore, in 2010, the Fondation Beyeler staged the largest and most significant European museum show to date of Basquiat’s work. The present exhibition, “Basquiat: The Modena Paintings”, revisits his artistic oeuvre, turning this time to a particular group of pictures—hitherto not known in their entirety as such—comprising eight large-scale paintings created by Basquiat in Modena in 1982. For the first time united, admire these fantastic artworks at Fondation Beyeler in an exhibition that had never realised before. Fondation Beyeler’s sound of summer We kicked off this year's summer program at the Fondation Beyeler with the @sun.set.music last Saturday. In addition to our popular series of electronic music events in collaboration with @nordsternbasel, our pavilion area in the museum park will fill on Wednesday evenings with our beloved “Sound Garden”, staring June 28. Come and chill with cool drinks in a beautiful outdoor setting to music by regional and national acts! No registration is required for these relaxed midweek evenings and admission is free.
