“Vibe yourself like you vibe a friend!” Ever find yourself cheering for your friends’ success while tearing yourself down? We are our own worst critic and enemy! We judge ourselves so harshly, which causes us to block our true selves from shining! A couple of months ago, my dance director asked me if I was interested in performing Tanoura, and I decided to give it a go even though my brain kept telling me I shouldn’t. When I watched my practice video, I thought that I was awful and that I should give up. When I showed my practice to her though she told me that I was doing a great job and she was pleased with my progress. I was being unfair to myself, and I wasn’t looking at my progress with kinder eyes! As @bellydancesoul and @thebellydancebundle said, I need to learn to watch my progress with my best friend's eyes! If you have just one new year's resolution, it should be this: “vibe yourself like you vibe a friend! Birkaç ay önce, dans Hocam bana Tanoura dansını öğrenip, bir düğünde dans edip etmiyeceğimi sordu. İçimdeki ses “sen yapamazsın” desede kendisine evet dedim! Pratik videomu izlediğimde berbat olduğumu düşündüm ve boşuna uğraşıyorum dedim kendi kendime. Ancak, Dans Hocama dansımı gösterdiğimde, bana harika bir iş çıkardığımı söyledi ve göstermiş olduğum ilerlemeden memnun kaldı. Kendime haksız yere sert davrandım ve kendi ilerleme nazik gözlerle bakmıştım! Aliat ve Tiffany'nin dediği gibi: “İlerlememi en iyi arkadaş gözleriyle izlemeyi öğrenmeliyim! Do you know who the real Santa Claus is? 🎅   Saint Nicolas was the Bishop of Greece’s Myra (modern day Demre, Antalya, Turkiye). He is believed to be the historical inspiration for Santa Claus.   There are many legends related to Saint Nicholas. The most known is how he saved three sisters from slavery. When Saint Nicholas heard that their father was considering selling his daughters to slavery as he did not have money to cover their dowry, he left a bag full of coins through the open window of their house in the secrecy of night.   Because of legends about his generosity and kindness especially toward children and the poor, Nicholas became the patron saint of children and sailors. He was a popular saint in Europe until the the Reformation.    He remained an important saint for the Dutch. They continued to celebrate the anniversary of his death on December 6. It was custom for children to put out their shoes the night before; in the morning, they would discover gifts from Saint Nicholas.    Dutch immigrants brought this tradition with them to America in the 1700s. Saint Nicholas was known to the Dutch as Saint Nikolass or, by his nickname, Sinterklaas.  In America, Sinterklass went through many transitions: Sinterklass became Santa Claus and he became part of the Christmas celebration.    In Turkey, Santa Claus is known as “Noel Baba” (translated as “Father Christmas”). He does not represent a religious persona but instead is part of the New Year Celebration.  Kids receive gifts from Noel Baba at New Year’s Eve under “Yilbasi Agaci” (New Year tree) or on their bed. I still vividly remember waking up to a gift left on my bed from Noel Baba when I was kid 😊 This being said, some Muslim Turkish families do not celebrate New Year as they consider it not to be an Islamic tradition. Christian Turkish families do follow Christmas traditions as part of their religious customs.    There is a Saint Nicholas Church in Demre, Antalya which was built above the burial site of Saint Nicholas.
