Borrowers of the Hustler Fund will now be able to access their savings from November this year. The announcement was made on Friday by Cooperatives and Micro and Small Enterprise CS Simon Chelugui. Since the inception of the Hustler Fund on December 1, 2022, Chelugui said the government has disbursed Sh36 billion to 22 million Kenyans across the country with a total saving of Sh 1.8 billion. He said the government has removed security features that prevent loan defaulters from being able to access loans when they refuse to pay. Instead, he said the government is focusing on cultivating the character of borrowers by enlightening them to pay back the loan which will enhance trust. “We have done away with the traditional securitization way of borrowing. No more security. We are pioneering credit scoring through the character of the borrower,” Chelugui said. “This is to understand that if you borrow, you need to pay. And if you borrow frequently and pay on time, your credit score will go up.” #starkenyanews

President William Ruto has said his administration will from now henceforth send money to universities as scholarships and not grants. The head of state said the move will ensure students from less privileged homes will receive 100 per cent scholarships. He added that his administration is focused on making education sustainable in the country and it must be possible to do so, as there is still a problem in the sector. Ruto spoke during the United Democratic Alliance party National Governing Council meeting held at Bomas of Kenya on Friday. "Many children from poor backgrounds don't get opportunities to go to TVETs or universities, and that is wrong and these are old students. We must ensure that our education is equitable and available," he said. "I have put in place funds to support our teachers so that our students can learn." The government had in July launched the New Higher Education Funding model for both scholarships and loans for students placed by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service. The launch followed a directive by Ruto on May 3, 2023, that sought to overhaul the higher education student funding model by aligning placement, government scholarship, and loans to the needs of students and their programme costs. All university and TVET students who have received letters from universities and TVET colleges as per the placement from Kenya KUCCPS are eligible for funding. #starkenyanews

Delegates have started trooping into the historic Bomas of Kenya where President William Ruto is set to chair a key part organ meeting that brings together all leaders elected on his United Democratic Alliance party. The UDA party is holding its first National Governing Council meeting since Ruto romped to power in last year's Presidential polls. The meeting of the NGC is set to endorse proposed changes to the UDA constitution including picking two more deputy party leaders.
