A Soninke Traditional Wedding - Ep3: “Manyoo Xarampareh” A Beautiful Bride #NGPgambia You can tell from the look that a Soninke bride is indeed royal. A tribe with a rich tradition. *A little history about the beautiful Soninke Tribe.* During the wedding ceremony which lasts normally around 7 days with different activities daily. One of the most interesting things happen on the mat where women surround the young girl sitting on a mortar or having her hair braided. Some wash her feet while others give her wise advice. [ See Previous Post] The ceremony is punctuated by the songs and dances of her mothers, aunts, sisters and friends to encourage her to stay in her new home. At the end of the religious blessing, her soaked clothes are taken off to cover her in white with traditional clothes. Her back is turned and, with her foot, she hits the mortar to make it fall. She is now ready to face the realities of married life This ritual is meant to encourage the new bride to be psychologically ready for the ordeal of the bridal chamber.

A Soninke Traditional Wedding - Ep2: “Manyoo Xarampareh” A Beautiful Bride #NGPgambia *A little history about the beautiful Soninke Tribe.* They are (also called Sarakole, Seraculeh, or Serahuli) and are influential-agriculturalists, well-known traveling and celebrated traders as well as Mandé-speaking people of West Africa that founded the famous  pre-colonial empire of Ghana c. 750-1240 CE. The Serahulis have an interesting, proud and rich history. When the Ghana empire dispersed, the resulting diaspora brought Soninkes to Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia. They’re well known to be “Jula”, an pre colonial indigenous Muslim merchants who travelled across the whole region, from the Guinean forest to the Sahel, and from Eastern Mali to the Atlantic coast. They traded in slaves, textiles, gold, salt, cattle, kola and other items back and forth the Senegambia and the Mande Plateau.
