#TBT Jason Dussault | Deconstructive/Constructive Hosted by Glenn O'Brien + Workhouse + Bullett Magazine | Sick Snaps by Ben Rosser/ @bfa + Jakub Kollarik / NYC 2015 Deconstructive/Constructive, a gallery opening celebrating a body of iconic mosaic works by Jason Dussault, produced by WORKHOUSE, and hosted by legendary founding Interview Magazine editor / @gq Magazine writer Glenn O'Brien and Bullett Magazine took place in New York City. The exhibit was sponsored by Billy Farrell Agency (BFA). Dussault is a Vancouver & New York-based artist whose practice focuses on combining traditional forms of mosaic with pop-culture characters from his childhood and the present. The works presented recalled the power of childhood memories through iconic characters that resonate with human nature¹s desire to retain an inner youth. Playful in nature yet anchored to the stringent values of adulthood, Dussault seeks to remind the viewer of a fragility that ultimately leads to self-awareness. This is the artist¹s debut solo exhibition in New York. Dussault explains, "Growing up in a small rural Canadian town in the late seventies and early eighties with young parents struggling to find their way, I spent much of my time alone, and the only access to art I had was comic books. I would spend hours trying to redraw these characters. Deconstructive/Constructive is my tribute to comic book art, my first love & inspiration." In 2015, Workhouse, CEO Adam Nelson began working as the Founding Partner & Executive Director for “House of Independents,” an innovative performance arts venue located in Asbury Park, NJ. In this charge, Nelson’s first mission was to cultivate a singular identity, promotional, and graphic style. He wanted imagery that resonated throughout the region while providing unique, imaginative shows that appealed to a wide range of viewers. He also intended to close the economic divide so he centralized the material with an aim to appeal to all demographics. For conceptual graphic creation, Nelson worked with a designer to represent this mission by using large, electric type letters to craft a modern street-style feel. To embolden the art he applied a minimal white with a metallic shimmer held in a geometric shape. The glittering gold pallet with black text told the story. The lines were arranged in geometric formations with varying font sizes and thickness building a hierarchy of information. Nelson put special emphasis on House of Independent’s logo, to suggest that the venue was akin to a “home.” Posters often included a central figure or character from a show or performance stylized in an arresting pose to draw attention to the information. By utilizing these elements, he cultivated a graphic language reflective of street typography which was unconventional for the Asbury landscape and was almost graffiti-like in its juxtaposition. House has been lauded for its sound and vision and the graphic look and feel allowed the venue to come out swinging against Asbury Park’s jam-packed music scene. During Nelson’s tenure, Asbury Park's HOUSE OF INDEPENDENTS had become downtown’s premiere live entertainment venue through an eclectic mix of theatre, dance, film, comedy, oddities, late night fare, and, of course, the music that has placed Asbury on the global radar. Bebe Buell // Discovered by super agent Eileen Ford who relocated Bebe from her hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia, to New York City where her passion, charisma and stellar looks propelled her into the limelight of Manhattan's music scene. After meeting musical genius Todd Rundgren, the two moved in together and began a steady relationship. Affectionately called “Friend To The Stars,” Bebe earned the title because of her closeness to everyone from Jack Nicholson to Andy Warhol, and her carte blanche access to rock’s elite royalty including relationships with Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, Stiv Bators, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Bebe’s musical career jumpstarted with her first release, “Covers Girl” (1981) produced by Ric Ocasek and Rick Derringer and featured legendary group The Cars backing her on two tracks. She formed The Gargoyles; the female-fronted, hard rock unit that was ahead of its time and caught the eye of Joey Ramone who had the band open for The Ramones. Soon, offers of record deals followed. But when Bebe’s daughter Liv found out her father was actually Steven Tyler, and not Todd Rundgren, 1991 became a year of big changes. Well documented in the media, Bebe has said that she didn’t want to tell Liv who her real father was because of Steven’s heavy drug addiction at the time. Todd had known that he was not the biological father of Liv but had kept the secret in order to give both Bebe and Liv some semblance of a stable home. As Steven got sober, the news of Liv’s parentage was no longer a secret. Bebe withdrew from the public eye to focus on raising her daughter. Around this time, Cameron Crowe released the film “Almost Famous” which is heavily based on certain elements of Bebe’s life. Crowe crafted some of the film’s dialogue from Bebe, which he remembered during their friendship on the road with Todd Rundgren in 1973.
