Jake Elwes, A.I. Interprets AI Interpreting 'Against Interpretation' (Sontag 1966), 2023. 3-channel video with sound, 25-minute loop Edition of 3 + 2AP An AI is made to visually interpret Susan Sontag's seminal essay 'Against Interpretation', and then another AI interprets those images back into language. The critical impulse to over-interpret artworks, Sontag argues in her essay, results in viewers reading too much into content and meaning instead of just experiencing the work of art and its form. In this video, an AI nonsensically reads too much into Sontag's words in an attempt to generate images, and a second AI reads too much into these images in an attempt to (re)create language. Bringing AI into conversation with Sontag has further implications since the generative AI is arguably uninterpretable, producing mimetic forms devoid of any human artist's intentionality, meaning or content. The visuals are created with an image-generating diffusion model, with Sontag's sentences serving as raw prompts/text inputs (Disco Diffusion by Somnai & Katherine Crowson). These images are then interpreted back into language using an image labelling algorithm (GPT & CLIP). These large pre-trained AI models were created using vast datasets of images and text taken from the internet, representing a frozen snapshot of a biased section of the internet at a particular point in time. The resulting interpretations and re-interpretations are simultaneously bizarre and authoritative in their spread of disinformation. The work represents a constant search for meaning and playfully asks if perhaps all art is just interpretation all the way down. We are thrilled to be partaking in Art in Mayfair this year, showcasing Kalliopi Lemos' Corset (2017) as a public installation located at New Bond Street until 9 July. This year's Sculpture Trail introduces new, temporary sculptures created by prominent artists, which will complement the existing permanent artworks that have already made their mark in this vibrant cultural hub of London. From Lemos' Tools of Endearment collection, the Corset aims to initiate a dialogue surrounding women's human rights and societal oppression. Symbolising a historical garment known for suppressing and shaping the body to fit fashion standards, the Corset now becomes the protective gear of a colossal female warrior, signifying the necessity for self-fortification against gender injustice. Happy birthday to Pop Art icon Derek Boshier! Your artistic brilliance continues to inspire and captivate, leaving an indelible mark on the world of contemporary art✨ Among the first exponents of British Pop Art, what distinguished Boshier from contemporaries — including Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, and Pauline Boty — was his trademark brand of satirical social commentary.   Together with fellow RCA students David Hockney, Allen Jones, Peter Philips, and R B Kitaj, he participated in the landmark 1962 Young Contemporaries exhibition that brought Pop Art to the attention of the wider public. The artist works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture. In the 1970s, the artist expanded from painting to photography, film, video, assemblage, and installations, yet he returned to painting by the end of the decade. On what shapes his work, Boshier commented: “Most important is life itself, my sources tend to be current events, personal events, social and political situations, and a sense of place and places”. Jake Elwes, Closed Loop, 2017. Closed Loop is a recording of two artificial intelligence models conversing with each other - one with words* the other with images* - in a never-ending feedback loop. The words of one describe the images of the other, which then seeks to describe the words with a fresh image... Two neural networks getting lost in their own nuances, sparking and branching off each other as they converse in a perpetual game of AI “Exquisite Corpse”. We are thrilled the National Portrait Gallery has commissioned and acquired this significant mural, "Work in Progress" (2021-22), by Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake, making it the museum's biggest acquisition in size to date, and a proud addition to its permanent collection. This remarkable mural, an integral part of the Reframing Narratives: Women in Portraiture project, in collaboration with the CHANEL Culture Fund, aims to amplify the representation of women in the Gallery's esteemed collection. Comprised of seven panels, this newly commissioned masterpiece showcases 130 extraordinary women who have profoundly influenced British history and culture. The creation of this mural involved an inspiring collaboration between Haworth & Blake, various colleges, and community groups across the UK. Through a series of workshops guided by the artists themselves, participants skillfully produced stencilled portraits using acrylic paints and paper, drawing inspiration from existing depictions of their chosen subjects. Represented artist Aida Mahmudova currently has a solo show at YARAT Contemporary Art Space with the exhibition Heaven Can Wait, on view until October 22nd. Mahmudova harnesses a rich material palette as a creative means by which to connect with herself and her surroundings. The artist uses material as tool to navigate the world she inhabits; here light, colour, and matter are trialled in undulating landscapes, semi-abstracts, and sculptures. Using layers of paper, clay, paint, cement, stone, and, more recently, epoxy resin and untreated marble, the artist explores connections and interactions, seeking to evoke a spectrum of universal human sentiments; love, loss, memory and desire.
