When renowned art collector @bernardlumpkin started his collection, he wasn’t initially focused on black artists. But while working as a producer at MTV he began to think about the sorts of discussions he’d like his art to prompt - and it was the conversations he had with his father before he died that gave him the answer. Today Lumpkin focuses on black emerging artists and has a book and touring exhibition of his family collection called ‘@younggiftedblackart’.⁠ ⁠ But Lumpkin isn’t the only black collector to think strategically about the background of the artists. According to Ellen Stone, CEO of art photography agency @publicofferingsltd, black collectors tend to focus on black artists because they want to see themselves in the work. “You’re much more likely to connect with something which reflects or speaks to your own experience. On the day that hundreds of bottles of wine were leaving the cellars of Ch. Rauzan-Ségla and Ch.
