“I felt a real responsibility as a leading lady in something with such a global exposure that I wanted to elevate her from an archetype”, Hayley Atwell, Glass summer cover star and new addition to the Mission Impossible franchise, tells us. “I didn’t want her to be an action star or a femme fatale or an ice queen or an ingenue. I was, like, can I be all of those things? Because we are.” And it seemed like the Mission Impossible movie was the ultimate film to be asking such questions. Meeting Tom Cruise at a variety of events over the years built a very clear base to build the filming process on. Atwell speaks fondly on “his transparency, how he’s willing to have confronting conversations about a scene… he would always say to me, you’ve got to feel like it’s a win for you, you’re the one who makes choices.” The success of this collaborative approach is evident in the early reviews of the film, which comes out next month, and serves as credit to Atwell’s innate ability to consider the female narrative in each project she is working on. “How can I have autonomy within small everyday choices that then hopefully build something where it feels like a fair representation of the female character?” With such commitment comes an instinctual trust, Atwell admits, and this has taken years to cultivate, “partly because of survival”. Atwell is notoriously private, she doesn't court publicity and even her Instagram account maintains a poised professionalism. After 17 years of work, however, she is finally embracing the limelight. “There’s got to come a time to stop denying the talent you have.” The highly anticipated release of Mission Impossible shows there’s no backpedaling now. Made up of 11 members, the South Korean band The Boyz are our next cover star for the summer issue of Glass Man. Having spent the past six years at the forefront of this genre of music, consistently surpassing expectations and reaching new heights, they have taken a moment to pause in the middle of their tour to reflect on everything that has happened since their debut.  Sangyeon, Kevin, Eric, New, Sunwoo, Hyunjae, Juyeon, Q, Younghoon, Jacob and Ju Haknyeon have come together and crafted their own lane in K-pop. Toying with genres like R&B and synthpop, they have continued to evolve with each of their chapters, unleashing a new sound with every body of work.  Earlier this year, The Boyz released their eighth EP, titled Be Awake. Speaking to us on this project, Kevin shared, “It was an album we were able to take the most time preparing. I think the anticipation to show our fans what we had brewing was quite big”.  Like with any new launch, the nerves are always there and now on the road of their Zeneration World Tour, Sangyeon can feel the pressure of performing, “Since this is our second tour, I think we thought about it even more. We thought again and again with the members about how we can show something better than our last world tour”.  Despite their humble trepidations, The Boyz's current journey across world stages will see them come one step closer to reaching legendary status in the K-pop world. Clara Rugaard, our next Glass cover star, is a walker of worlds, often found tip-toeing between fiction and reality. From her Danish and Northern-Irish background to her upbringing between Copenhagen and London, the actor’s introduction to life in parallel worlds was an early one. “I think I always knew that I wanted to perform in some way. I was always running around the house singing and dancing as a kid.” Some may recognise Rugaard for the post-apocalyptic thriller, I Am Mother, where she stars alongside Hilary Swank and Rose Byrne, and others from The Rising, where Rugaard’s character returns as a ghost to bring her murderer to justice. Regardless, Rugaard is a sucker for a sci-fi, dystopian world. Though her upcoming projects are likely to expand into a different, more light-hearted realm with the Romeo and Juliet-based musical, Verona, at the end of this year, for now, Rugaard is exploring another liminal universe – as a troubled starlet in the sixth series of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror. If you haven’t started watching it yet, you should. “It kept me on my toes the entire time, never knowing what twists and turns might occur. I really didn’t see what was coming either. I expected nothing less from Charlie Brooker.” The summer issue of Glass is out on Monday. It took 48 hours for Netflix’s coming-of-age teen drama, Heartstopper to make it into the Top 10 most popular shows on the platform. In that time, William Gao went from your average South London teenager to a recognisable face on screen. The now 20-year-old is a month away from the show’s highly anticipated second season, and for the summer issue of Glass Man, he takes a moment to reflect on the gigantic leap that he and his cast mates endured last spring.  “I didn’t know the length of which the pandemonium was going to be,” says Gao. Still in slight disbelief of getting the role of Tao in the show, as he “was 17-years-old and covered in acne and just so scared” when auditioning; the actor has cemented himself as a name to watch.  But beyond the camera, Gao is also known for his musical identity too, as the singer of Wasia Project, a band that he formed with his sister Olivia Hardy in 2019. Both are integral parts of who he is as an individual, and it’s this dual identity that helps his creative outputs, and personal life too. “It’s that thing when we characterise based on past experience, or at least that’s how I relate to a character. And with music, I write about life, and it’s based on relationships or friendships or growing up,” he explains. “If you don’t actually live, you have nothing to inspire your art and you have nothing to inspire your characters, so that is something that I’ve become aware of”.  While this fluctuation may not be doable for some, it’s what has made William Gao one of his generation’s biggest forces to reckon with, and a trait that brings with it the promise of a life in the limelight.  Summer issue of Glass Man is out on Monday. Bruna Marquezine, the first cover star reveal of the summer issue of Glass, is about to become the first Brazilian actress in the DC-live action superhero franchise, Blue Beetle. It feels like an overdue statement to be writing about Hollywood, but one that Bruna is taking in her stride. “I want it to feel more like an opportunity than a responsibility”, she tells Glass. “It’s an amazing opportunity to represent my country, talk more about my culture, and inspire other women from Latin America. And hopefully be a good representation for young viewers or people who look like me. I will continue to strive to ensure people will not put me in a box.” Marquezine is understandably passionate about this subject, but she admits that a perplexment has also heightened alongside it. “In my country, I’m not Latina, I’m just myself. And outside of my country, this is the first thing people see. And that’s something new to me.” It’s a sober reflection of the state of diversity in the industry, in which ‘first ever’ is a sentence we find ourselves still having to write for the Glass cover reveals. Tokenism, however, should not, and will not, deflect from Marquezine’s undeniable talent. “If you believe in something, never stop. And I never stopped believing.” For Maquezine, Blue Beetle is just “the first step”. So, if her others are to be as momentous, we can only imagine what will become of her name in the Hollywood sphere. After all, “It’s not about other people. It’s about you.” We are honoured to feature her in the summer issue, which hits shelves on Monday. Head to our stockists page to see where you can purchase a copy.
