"Sometimes being a mentor, is being a friend." – Lek Jie Ying, Assistant Manager, HR Wellness. Here's Jie Ying's reflection on the mentorship she has received and now, a mentor herself. – I have had the privilege of meeting one of the most impactful mentors during my time in the hospital. He guided me greatly in my self-reflection and on bringing greater value to the workplace. Being in an environment where we engage multiple stakeholders daily, my mentor highlighted the importance in staying true to my values and boundaries, yet having the ability to work with colleagues to achieve desired outcomes. He has also helped me see how we may frame our thoughts to see a common end goal, even when disagreements occur during work interactions. These lessons proved useful for my personal life too, as I started to examine the different areas of my life to see how I can be a congruent staff and self. For some time now, I have been mentoring juniors who are new to the organisation. The conversations I have with them remind me of my younger days as a brand new executive – earnest and hopeful. I’d like to think that at the end of the programme with the juniors, they too would have gained lessons applicable beyond our workplace, and perhaps in their personal lives too. It’s my turn now, to pay it forward. While we may not be able to see the results right now, but sowing that seed will reap its fruits one day. “Patience is key for teachers and learners. Not everyone begins at the same level nor progresses at a similar pace. But once you overcome the hurdles, and hit the finishing line, you emerge victorious.”– U Pe Thet, Principal Radiographer, Diagnostic Radiology Now a clinical educator who coaches junior radiographers, Pe Thet migrated from Myanmar to Singapore in 1992 and continued his career as a Diagnostic Radiographer. For the past 29 years in TTSH, his passion for teaching has never dimmed. Ten years into his career as a radiographer, he took up an opportunity to be a clinical educator in Myanmar. After a decade of teaching, he brought along his wealth of experience and passion for teaching when he settled in Singapore. “I’ll always remember the challenges I faced in my younger days, and how my teacher’s guidance built my confidence and nurtured me into who I am. With that, I want to impart my knowledge and experiences to nurture the younger generation of tomorrow.” Pe Thet shared that in his 50 years of practice as a radiographer, teaching has become a part of his life. While every student has different capabilities and skills, he is inspired to guide each of them to their fullest potential and is heartened to see them apply what they have learnt in the clinical setting. “My role as an educator is to keep nurturing the younger generation and let my light continue to shine as guidance for them”, Pe Thet says. #TTSHeartWork #TTSHeartbeats

We’ve all had a teacher, a mentor or a friend we remember for the positive impact they’ve made in our lives. Teaching is a work of heart - sharing experiences, imparting knowledge, and lending a light to guide the way, with hopes that this light continues to shine for others. This Teachers’ Day, we take a dive into the lives of some of the teachers in our midst – the ones who have made a difference in their own little ways. “Always be sure you leave a lesson with at least one idea.” — A/Prof Ong Thiew Chai, Emeritus Consultant, Psychiatry As the founder and first Head of Department (HOD) of Psychological Medicine, A/Prof Ong has done much to grow the team and its clinical capabilities. Today, we have come a long way from a small team in 1986, to run one of the busiest Psychiatry departments in Singapore. In his 16-year tenure as HOD and the years after, A/Prof Ong has also held numerous educational appointments. He used to be a Training Supervisor for Advanced Specialist Trainees in Psychiatry and an educator in NUS. “I always tell the junior doctors – always be sure you leave a lesson with at least one idea. The more lessons and talks you attend, the more ideas you will have and find things to apply them to.” He remains an integral part of our Psychiatry department to this day. He inspires the younger generation of psychiatrists by working full time and running a heavy schedule of clinic sessions. Beyond being a clinician, he has mentored many of the doctors in the department and has welcomed the juniors to shadow him at work. In a career of close to 50 years and counting, he has offered a willing ear and open heart to those seeking professional guidance. This year, A/Prof Ong receives the Lee Foundation - NHG Lifetime Achievement Award 2021. He continues to mentor the junior team members, at the same time continually seeking new knowledge to update his clinical skills, exploring better patient care options and new areas of therapy, including clinical hypnotherapy. In his 18 years of nursing, Christopher Soh, or Brother Chris as we know him, has seen SARS, Ebola, Zika, H1N1, MERS-CoV and now COVID-19. Though there have been sacrifices, exhaustion and anxiety, he knows for certain that he would choose nursing all over again. Lessons of trust, camaraderie and collective leadership have taught him the key to getting through these challenges – that when we look after each other, we can look after others. “To me, it is not just a job or a career.
