The @hbo and BBC1 series Rain Dogs is an unconventional family comedy that follows Costello Jones (@daisymaycooper), a single-mother, aspiring writer and peepshow dancer, as she navigates life in London after being evicted from her flat with her daughter Iris (Fleur Tashjian). @mrwilley and team designed the show’s title card and visual identity, including a custom typeface for the up-front actor cards and end credits. Written by playwright @cash_carraway_ and produced by @sidgentle, Rain Dogs provides an honest depiction of life below the poverty line. The design team pulled inspiration from the show’s setting, researching graffiti, street signs and the printed ephemera found on the streets of London. The show’s logo is set in an elegant cursive typeface with a distressed treatment that adds a layer of grit to an otherwise glamorous wordmark. These opposing elements reference the class tensions that drive the humor-filled drama. The central type remains consistent in each episode, but the texture subtly changes in each title sequence to reflect the show’s progression. The secondary typeface contrasts with the ornate script of the title card. The bespoke font borrows its construction from the utilitarian letterforms found on receipts and lottery tickets, but elevates them to feel more expressive than a typical monolinear, monospaced typeface. The actor cards further complement the unrefined world depicted in the show by replicating the streaks caused by thermal receipt printers, adding subtle irregularities to the typeface that feel tough, tactile and integrated into Costello’s domain. @jonmarshalll and team have followed a research-led approach to develop a screen bar lamp to support working from home in later life.    The @designage___ Institute’s mission is to amplify the voice of people as they age and create a thriving economy for aspirational products and services that support healthy ageing.     Shifts in working patterns and advances in technology have led to many older people working primarily from home, however the design of most homes does not meet their needs.     Jon and his industrial design team were invited to join experts in architecture, design for ageing and computing from @northumbriauni to identify opportunities for products and furniture to support home working in later life.     Co-design workshops identified a range of issues, including flexibility to work in multiple locations, access to light, power and storage, the ability to convert a room to and from a workspace, and access to exercise.    Led by Professor of Architecture Paul Jones, the resulting project: ‘Home Office to Age in Place’ is an integrated flexible working space that provides pop-out desk space, storage, power, lighting and even exercise space that can be hidden when not needed.    Pentagram developed a moveable caddy and a concept for mobile lighting, power and storage that allows any table to be converted into a workstation. Lighting and power were identified as huge issues, as lack of access prevents the freedom to work anywhere in the home.    The Light-Block design uses ‘screen bar’ lighting technology, a linear LED lamp which can be positioned close to a computer screen to provide precise lighting and multiple levels of adjustment allow for task lighting and video calls.     The LED lamp is dimmable and adjustable for colour temperature. The built-in battery can directly power a laptop and provides a stable base and an area for storage. This #MemorialDay is also the 106th birthday of President John F. Kennedy, and in honor of both, we’d like to share a recent project in Washington, DC. @jabbottmiller and team developed the design for “Art and Ideals: President John F. Kennedy,” a permanent interpretive exhibition at @kennedycenter marking its 50th anniversary season. The Kennedy Center was established as a living memorial to the President, reflecting the centrality of art in his administration. “Art and Ideals” vividly documents his early immersion in literature and history, as well as the extraordinary emphasis on the role of art in a democratic society that John and Jacqueline Kennedy brought to the White House. The exhibition is divided into four key areas that link the arts to democracy, social change, culture and the White House itself, weaving together artifacts, images, and footage to bring the story to life for visitors. Pentagram’s design features a dramatic architectural frieze of LEDs that allows visitors to be immersed in the power of Kennedy’s words. The media component was developed in collaboration with @batwinandrobin and incorporates photography, text, and archival footage. A series of three interactive experiences were developed with @thegreeneyl’s Richard The and his team. The exhibition was designed and produced in collaboration with architects @kierantimberlake, consulting curator @ileensgallagher, and an advisory committee of five leading U.S. historians, who helped establish the focus of the narrative and relate Kennedy’s ideals to the Center’s role as a living memorial. Luke Powell, Jody Hudson-Powell and team have designed a new identity for @channel4, the UK’s most disruptive broadcaster. Working in collaboration with Channel 4’s in-house agency @4creativec4, the new brand system brings the broadcaster’s content, channel brands and streaming service together, balancing the channel’s need for cohesion and consistency while embracing its rebellious attitude and unapologetic creativity. From renaming the current streaming player as ‘Channel 4’, defining its unmistakable tone of voice, redrawing and animating its iconic logo and expanding its much-loved typeface, to creating an ever-evolving and interconnected cube-based world framework, Channel 4’s new masterbrand helps engage viewers in all the ways they experience content, from street to screen. Motion and interaction are at the heart of the new identity, with behavioural principles guiding the brand outputs and providing viewers with an immersive and expressive experience. Grounded by the consistent brand narrative, ‘4 is a traveller’, Channel 4 can now confidently lead its viewers through a world of ‘Altogether Different’ content. Viewers come to Channel 4 for the content they love, and Pentagram has created a brand system that addresses the breadth of contemporary viewership, with principles designed to future-proof the brand. The system keeps content firmly at its core, boldly showcasing must-see shows, films and digital originals, and connecting new viewers to a prolific brand that has been at the heart of British creativity for over four decades.
