Our 26th volunteer mobilization of Nurdle Free Lanka took place between Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia beaches. This was also the first nurdle cleanup conducted in 2023. 35 volunteers joined in to remove 5kg of nurdles from the shoreline. Nurdle Free Lanka Campaign intends to remove plastic pellets that have polluted the shorelines of Sri Lanka due to the MV X-Press Pearl Disaster in 2021. Visual artist Amith Venkataramaiah's series of AI images speculate on the evolution of marine life, existing in tandem with the exponential appearance of plastic waste in oceans. Through Venkataramaiah’s AI-generated digital artworks, this speculative world deploys colourful plastics as a sort of defence barrier worn by aquatic creatures, including a whale, a starfish, jellyfish, seahorse, octopus, and turtle. In the vein of science fiction, the generated image series is humorous and ingenious. Oil has been washing off the coast of Sarakkuwa, South of Negombo We received reports that sludges of oil residue have been washing along Sarakkuwa beach since 8am on June 28, 2023. Sarakkuwa beach was the epicenter where the impact from the MV X-Press Pearl disaster was first recorded in 2021. Just 6 nautical miles away, part of the MV X-Press Pearl wreck can still be seen at sea. The oil consists of either bunk or lubricant oil clumped together in various sizes, washing up along the coast starting from Sarakkuwa, moving northwards. Based on the wind direction forecast since the morning compared with the oil spill distribution, there is a high probability that the oil originated from the wreck of MV X-Press Pearl. This is further established based on the characteristic of the form of oil going on the shore Thousands of blue button jellyfish (Porpita porpita) were found stranded along with the oil with indications of oil residue found within the jellyfish Although it is yet to be fully confirmed that MV X-Press Pearl wreckage is responsible for this spill, it's vital that the reasoning for this spill be fully documented in a transparent manner. The same beach is considered having the world's largest percentage of nurdles after MV X-Press Pearl disaster The local community is in the process of removing the oil using rudimentary methods such as shovels & gunny bags while MEPA is supervising the cleaning process. According to trusted local sources, there was an effort to hide this spill and to avoid it from the attention of the media. We have already alerted the MV X-Press Pearl disaster evaluation committee along with key media and other relevant authorities. Wave breaker surrounding Port City Colombo converts to an underwater coral reef colony The most probable reason for fast growth in coral around the port city is since there are no excessive nutrients entering the area. Excessive nutrients cause algal blooms which hampers the growth of corals. The protective barrier around the port city limits ocean pollution entering the area and stops strong ocean currents from harming the growth The correct amount of sunlight, water temperature and salinity helps the fast growth of corals. Usually the water temperature should be between 23'C - 29'C, saline water ranging from 32 - 42 parts per thousand and is very sensitive to pollution and sediments. #coral #colombo #portcity #srilanka #coralreef #breakwater #reef

We successfully completed the 12th underwater cleanup of Cleaner Seabeds for Sri Lanka in Trincomalee on 5th and 6th June 2023.
