On the recommendation of Dr. Sohail Ahmed, founder of NED Scholars, a group of NED University students joined Heritage Walk Karachi Session 151 on 11th June 2023, to explore the historic treasure, to enable in protecting, and preserving the Old Town Karachi. 1. Heritage Walk Karachi (HWK) is a project of Pakistan Chowk Community Center (PCCC). Heritage Architect Marvi Mazhar @master_mm is the Founder & Creative Head of these projects. 150th Heritage Walk Karachi was conducted on June 4th, 2023 an extremely hot and humid morning with enthusiasts & people who were tourist in their own city. 1. Marvi Mazhar is giving a talk on 'Heritage Policies & Real Estate'. 2. Marvi Mazhar is leading the explorers through the streets & alleys of Old Town Karachi. 3. The explorers are looking at the arched entrance of the Dawoodi Bohra Community, Faiz-e-Hussaini Building, built in 1880. 4. The explorer is fascinated & points to the stonework of the corbel of this building. 5. Taking photographs of a beautiful dilapidated building. 6. Here the explorers are looking at the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat Khana, which was built nearly a century ago in 1346 Hijri calendar 7. Marvi Mazhar speaking about the architectural details of the KMC Building, which has domes on four corners and a clock tower in the centre. 8. On 21st May 2023, Heritage Walk Karachi Session 149th @heritagewalkkhi A project of Pakistan Chowk Community Center @pakistanchowkcc was conducted. The built heritage of Karachi is there to be explored and shared, listen to the narrative gathered through oral history documentation, collection of stories, given by the Guide @shahnau learning & exploring hidden corners which are under threat. Come and join our weekly Heritage Walk Karachi. On 28th May, 2023 we will be conducting the 150th Heritage Walk, a milestone for us all at PCCC 1. Explorers signing in before the start of the Heritage Walk to mark their presence. 2. Holding & observing the Route map provided before the start of Heritage Walk Karachi 3. Heritage Architect and spatial advocate Marvi Mazhar @master_mm is the Foundef & Creative head of PCCC speak about the politics of real estate, intervention of developers, conservation & preservation. 4. The group of explorers are briefed & given introduction & information about Pakistan Chowk Community Centre (PCCC) & its different Projects and the Administrative Quarters of the Colonial era 5. Learning about the lost history of Karachi, the drinking water fountain for human consumption and troughs for animals consumption particularly the animals used in animal drawn transport. 6. The explorers look at the stone work of the demolished building and the Peepal tree grown behind the wall. 7. Looking up at the marble plaque of a century plus old Dhaniram & Sons Building of 1918. 8. Here the explorers were shown how the territory is marked. Instead of repairing or conserving the building, it has been painted vibrantly. 9. The explorers looking at the architectural details of the beautiful Mercantile Co-Operative Bank Ltd Building. 10. These metal street signs painted in blue are now seen rarely in Old Town. This is a signage in Urdu language. Heritage Walk Karachi, after a break for Ramazan, resumed the weekly Heritage Walks. On 30th April 2023, Session 147 was conducted exclusively for the Textile Design students & the faculty of Imperial College Karachi @imperialcollegepk 1. The explorers took photographs of the stone work of the demolished building and the Peepal tree grown behind the wall. 2. The students are going through the Route map provided before the start of the Heritage Walk. 3. The explorers are looking at the engraved signage of 'Bank of India' behind the UBL Bank signage. 4. Listening to the Guide @shahnau and learning about the lost history of Karachi, of the drinking water fountain for human consumption and troughs for animals, used for animal drawn transport. 5. Cutchi Memon Mosque in Garhi Khata, renovated in 2000, inspired by the architecture of the Masjid e Nabwi, Madina, Saudi Arabia. 6. Observing the names of Sarnagati Building a pink sandstone building with a corner facade, written in Sanskrit language & English language. 7. Looking up at the amazing architectural details of a century old building and Gothic style windows of Dhaniram & Sons 1918. 8. Here, the explorers were shown how the territory is marked. Instead of repairing or conserving the building, it has been painted vibrantly. 9. he present name of this building is Zainab Manzil. The names of the buildings, like the names of roads & streets, have been changed. Here, the explorers are being shown the 'ॐ' sign, a sacred sound, syllable, mantra of Hinduism in the wreath design of the grill, which indicates that it belonged to a Hindu family. 10. A group of students of the History Society of IBA, in collaboration with @cultures.iba IBA Culture Society along with three German tourists, joined Heritage Walk Karachi Session 146 on 19th February 2023. They were informed about the natural heritage, the indigenous trees of Karachi. The explorers were also informed about the built heritage, the architectural details, architectural styles and the diversity of the area where different communities are living together harmoniously. Before the start of the Heritage Walk the explorers are briefed about Pakistan Chowk Community Center (PCCC) and its projects 4. Here the explorers are being shown the different signages which change with the different commercial activities of the area. 5. 6. Before Partition, Parsi community resided in an alley and also had two liquor shops, because of that it was known as Parsi Gali. President Zia ul Haq banned liquor, it's consumption, sale, manufacturing etc. so washed up bottles of liquor are sold and now and it is commonly known as Botal Gali 7. After the Heritage Walk the explorers are given a feedback form to fill to know their experience of the Heritage Walk, the information given during the Walk, and if they have any suggestions. 9. After the cold spell of winters on a beautiful sunny Sunday, 5th February 2023, Heritage Walk Karachi Session 145 was conducted with like-minded explorers who came to know how Karachi was as they were shown the natural heritage & the built heritage. 1.
