Attended a spiritual art retreat for the first time during the vacation break and was amazed once again by how much deep insights art can bring to one. We are so used to thinking - facts, logic, theory - because those are certain, safe and tested. It can be so hard to acknowledge what we are really feeling because emotions are such a complex, uncertain and vulnerable thing. Art, art-making and imaginative play helps to articulate the unconscious and unknown within us. Who’d have thought a vacuum cleaner can speak so much to me. Reading this book, gifted by a friend, has helped reinforce what I’ve learnt about mental health, trauma, neuroplasticity and healing. If you are struggling in one way or another, I pray you’ll find the courage to heal. Bruce Perry says balance is the core of health. “We feel and function best when our body’s systems are in balance, and when we’re in balance with friends, family, community, and nature.” Sharing some ways I try to find balance, especially in this strange times we’re living in now: 1. Plants and flowers - my love for plants started when my friends gifted me my first pot of ficus elastica during a time of grieving. Who’d had known that green fingers could develop from grief? Lately, I’ve also started to buy flowers, just because it makes me happy. Was watching Hometown Cha-cha-cha last night and a group of old ladies, while standing in a field of flowers, said, “You don’t appreciate flowers when you’re young.” Her friend replied, “Yes, because when we were young, we thought we were the flower.” For some reason, I found that v relatable 😂 2. Walks in nature - the best things in life are free. 3. Sunrise and sunsets - they never fail to remind me of God’s faithfulness. 4. Baking and food - sharing food with family and friends is surely one of life’s greatest pleasures. 5. Art / Bible journaling - haven’t been doing as much art, but I find that even the act of highlighting, doodling, writing and drawing arrows and boxes in my quiet time helps me to make sense of whatever I’m reading and how I’m feeling at the moment. Hello, how are you? The last 2 years have been hard for all of us, and frankly I feel the fatigue of the pandemic and everything else. Apparently there’s a term for this emotion, and it’s called languishing. I think it’s ok to admit that we are struggling, that we’re not so ok, and that we might need help. If you’re still here seeing this post, I hope you’re doing ok; and if you’re not, I hope you have someone to walk alongside you on this journey. Away with the noise, alone with Christ. Sometimes we just need to slip away for a little while to thin out the noise and be quiet with God. To me, that is a form of self-care. The personal and conversational approach to Christian spirituality and the bite-sized duration helps me to think about my own relationship with God. God’s grace may not always come in the form of having the ability to sense His presence, pray, read the bible or being delivered from your current circumstances.
