The great hammerhead can be distinguished from other hammerheads by the shape of its “hammer” (called the “cephalofoil”), which is wide with an almost straight front margin, and by its tall, sickle-shaped first dorsal fin. I’m sad for their families and many friends closely involved. I cant imagine what they are going through. When I shot these images of Titan in 2018 with Stockton and the OceanGate crew performing test dives there was so much excitement about what they’d do in the future.. it still seems surreal. Sad news.
