I’m so excited to support the #Choose2Reuse bill (No. 1003) that was just introduced in NYC! It would require corporate-owned, fast-casual restaurants to offer customers reusable food packaging that can be returned, sanitized and reused for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. It is sponsored by council members Marjorie Velázquez, @keithpowersnyc, @ebottcher, and @cmsandynurse! I was so proud to speak and support alongside Manhattan Borough President @marklevinenyc, @alysiareiner, @laurensweeney__ , @thetrashwalker, @erika.tannor and more! The Choose to Reuse bill provides an incredible opportunity for businesses to save money and participate int he reuse economy and for customers to participate in a more sustainable future just by supporting the restaurants they love!

If there’s anything that has an amazing positive impact on the planet, it’s composting. Most people think that if they throw food into a landfill it’s OK because it will “biodegrade“. That’s actually not the case. Food breaks down using aerobic digestion, or digestion with oxygen. However, in landfills, there is a lack of oxygen which results in anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion releases methane, which is exponentially more effective as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over the timeframe that scientists estimate that the catastrophic effects of climate change will occur. If you want to directly prevent global warming in a relatively accessible way (you can worm compost in even the most lifeless spaces), then composting is the way to go! I keep mine in the freezer and then drop it off at the farmers market but since COVID I use NYC brown bins. NYC compost collection ends May 4, so you can still participate until then. I’ve been fighting against fracking for over a decade. Fracking is the process of extracting natural gas from shale rock formations. It requires millions of gallons of water, a cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals, and releases methane that is stored in the earth, methane that is MUCH worse for global warming than carbon dioxide over a 100 year timeframe (when is when scientists estimate the catastrophic impacts of climate change will occur). I HATE fracking so I decided to do something about it. I was founder and president of Students Against Fracking at NYU, lobbied to representatives like @kirstengillibrand to block it, screamed at countless buildings, risked arrest countless times while protesting, and dedicated most of my college career to fighting one of the most environmentally detrimental practices of our time. On September 24, 2011, the @nygovcuomo administration banned fracking in NY state. A MASSIVE win. However, it was one of just 50 states, a fraction of a global population fighting against the biggest lobby and the dirtiest fighter in the world. Workarounds for this ban were pipelines that took fracked gas from states like Pennsylvania where it was legal, and transported it to NY. Today, for the 3rd time, the @nygovcuomo administration blocked this pipeline, which promises to be the final push needed to prevent this pipeline from happening. Grassroots activists are the fire alarms. They see things before anyone else and they fight louder and harder and more passionately than anything I’ve ever seen. I’m so grateful for the people who have been tirelessly fighting this fight. Especially to @joshfoxfilm for opening my eyes to this problem in the first place and @markruffalo for being a top celebrity opponent. Everything I ate in 3 days as a vegetarian in London! Save this if you’re headed to London! 1️⃣ - @dishoom - tons of vegetarian options, it was delicious! 2️⃣ - @bao_london - limited vegetarian options but I had the daikon bao and their house made pickles 3️⃣ - @koyalondon - my most regularly visited London restaurant- I always order the vegetarian seaweed udon, house made pickles, and nato (my favorite!!) 4️⃣ - Drinks at Regents Park in reusable and refillable cups. 5️⃣ - Fairuz - Lebanese, lots of vegetarian options 6️⃣ - @jolene_newingtongreen was amazing. The menu changes daily and it’s full of delicious food that I’d want to eat every day! You can’t skip the pastries. 7️⃣ - @silasyard - a great public garden that does private events to support residents of public housing in East London. 8️⃣ - @thewolseley - I probably wouldn’t go again unless maybe for a meeting or to try the tea. Vegetarian options but nothing to write home about. ⚡️⚡️ some other options- @silolondon, @tofuveganlondon @yeastbakery - what’s also amazing in London is most restaurants have a separate vegetarian/vegan menu making it easy to eat at most restaurants! That’s right. AIR COMPANY, a carbon utilization company, created a technology that transforms CO2 into ethanol (alcohol), which is the main ingredient in their fragrance. But that’s not their only product. In addition to decarbonizing perfume and vodka, AIR COMPANY was also just granted a contract from the US Air Force for their Sustainable Aviation Fuel which will allow us to rely less on fossil fuels for future global travels. How does this work? Trees and other forms of plant photosynthesis are around 1% as efficient at removing CO2 as AIR COMPANY’s proprietary technology, which converts CO2 at a rate greater than 100,000 average US trees in a reactor the size of a bathtub. They use carbon tech that mimics plant photosynthesis to convert CO2 into alcohol that can yield a wide variety of products, including fragrance, vodka, and jet fuel. I recently attended an event to learn more about @janefondaclimatepac which will leverage the donations of those who are climate concerned to counter the outsized influence the fossil fuel industry has on our government. Their work will “make sure politicians who support oil and gas are as afraid for their jobs as we are about the impending climate disaster.” In 2020, the fossil fuel industry poured $139 million into our elections. This money has real consequences. Major solutions are stopped cold: the Green New Deal, Build Back Better, clean energy investments, and ending billions in tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry — all because of politicians backed by Big Oil. The climate crisis poses unprecedented threats to our communities, our environment, our economy, and our security. It’s not too late to change our course. But it won’t happen as long as oil, gas, and coal companies maintain their hold on American politics.  Fossil fuel lobbyists and their money control Congress. They block actions with huge donations to politicians from both parties. Jane Fonda Climate PAC will help elect leaders who will rise to the urgency of this moment and stand up to the fossil fuel industry.

I’ve recently finished this amazing book, Soil- the incredible story of what keeps the earth, and us, healthy- by Matthew Evans. It dives into the science, history, importance of our soil, as well as threats to its health. It’s a full picture that proves what we do to the soil, we do to ourselves. I’m so excited to announce that I’ve recently co-founded a new venture fund called @overview.capital! We invest in business at the pre-seed and seed stages that are addressing climate change! Today I’m so excited announce one of our first investments in a company called @alga.bio, that is going to change the world! What the’ve done is created a kelp based feed additive for ruminant animals, like cattle, which can reduce enteric fermentation derived methane emissions (cow burps!) by up to 97%! This is so important because methane is a crazy powerful warming gas (80x+ more powerful than CO2 (carbon dioxide) over a 20 year timeframe)!! So if we are going to address climate change and mitigatge it, especially in the short term, we have to not just focus on CO2, we have to address methane, and Alga is doing just that since about 27% of anthropogenic methane emissions are derived from ruminant animals (mainly cattle) and so, at scale, what Alga is building has the potential to mitigate about 1/3 of methane emissions!!! Which, by the way, is just about the amount of methane (30%) hat has been pledged by our government to be reduced by 2030. When fully realized, what Alex, Daria, and Caroline are building over at Alga will, quite literally, reshape our future.
