Can you spot the Canadarm? 🤔 The Gateway will be a small, human-tended space station orbiting the Moon that will provide extensive capabilities to support #Artemis missions. Built with international and commercial partnerships, Gateway’s capabilities for supporting sustained exploration in deep space include docking ports for a variety of visiting spacecraft, space for crew to live and work, and on-board science investigations. In this video, we see an animation of the exterior of the Gateway. Can you catch which part is the Canadarm3, a smart robotic system with a large, 8.5-metre-long arm, a smaller, more dexterous arm, and a set of detachable tools? The one… the only… Moonikin. Commander Moonikin Campos is preparing for his greatest adventure yet: flying to the Moon and back aboard #Artemis I. During the mission, he will be helping collect data on the vibrations and accelerations future astronauts will experience on the journey inside the Orion spacecraft. He will be accompanied by his two quirky companions, Helga and Zohar. As a part of a collaborative effort between the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Helga and Zohar will be testing a radiation protection vest that may be worn by future astronauts. The Moonikin was named “Campos” last year during the “Name the Artemis I Moonikin Challenge” when the public had the opportunity to vote on a winning name. “Campos” is a reference to Arturo Campos, an electrical engineer who was instrumental in the Apollo 13 rescue efforts. #TBT Relief is visible on the faces of the Apollo 13 crew following their return to Earth.⁣ ⁣ While en route to the Moon, one of the oxygen tanks aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft exploded. Astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise were suddenly stranded 205,000 miles from Earth with their supply of air, water, and electricity in danger. With the help of engineers, ground teams, and the crew’s quick thinking, the Apollo 13 astronauts successfully survived and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean nearly six days after launch.⁣ ⁣ On the same day, NASA Administrator Thomas O. Paine and Deputy Administrator George M. Low established the Apollo 13 Review Board to investigate the cause of the accident. Teams are preparing for a hot fire test of a full-size test solid rocket booster motor in July in support of future Space Launch System (SLS) flights during #Artemis missions.⁣ ⁣ The 120-second Flight Support Booster-2 (FSB-2) will test the electronic thrust vector control system that will replace the current hydrazine-powered system, currently scheduled to be implemented on the ninth SLS flight. The static firing will also test the Artemis III igniters and will evaluate several new components and materials incorporated into the SLS five-segment motor design. On June 20, teams conducted a wet dress rehearsal to validate the timelines and procedures for the #Artemis I launch, including loading propellant into the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s tanks, performing the launch countdown through the handover to the automated launch sequencer, and draining the tanks.⁣ ⁣ The agency has reviewed the data from the rehearsal and determined this pivotal testing campaign is complete. The agency will roll SLS and Orion back to the Vehicle Assembly Building at @NASAKennedy next week to prepare the rocket and spacecraft for launch and repair a leak detected during the most recent rehearsal.⁣ ⁣ NASA plans to return SLS and Orion to the pad for launch in late August. Earlier this year, the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, which implements the First Nations Launch (FNL) competition on behalf of NASA, hosted the activity’s first Launch Weekend since 2019 at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In attendance at this 13th annual event were nearly 60 students from 13 schools around the country who represented 25 tribal organizations.⁣ ⁣ The NASA FNL competition, an Artemis Student Challenge, offers students from Tribal Colleges and Universities, Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions, and schools with American Indian Science and Engineering Society chapters the opportunity to demonstrate engineering and design skills through high-powered rocketry.⁣ ⁣ This year’s overarching competition theme was flight dynamics. The Moon Challenge required a GPS data logger onboard and an apogee of 3,500 to 4,000 ft., in addition to verifying stability and creating a 3D reconstruction of the trajectory of the flight. The Mars Engineering Challenge required a cold gas thruster system, gyroscope sensor, and an external camera – with the rocket maintaining a roll rate of 120-240 rpm for 3 seconds and reaching an altitude range of 3,500 to 4,000 ft.
