The safest communities do not have more police they have more resources. Access to resources is the most effective way to prevent crime all together. Policing has never been about public safety. Policing is a means to assert power, control and dominance over people who continue to be exploited by capitalism. If you had your basic needs taken care of, food, water, shelter, health, education etc.. you wouldn’t be exploited by a job that over works and underpays you. The reason they do not provide these resources to our communities is because it is easy to exploit people for labour when they are hungry. It is easy to exploit people when they’re sick. It is easier to exploit people when they’re un able to educate themselves on how systems of oppression work. When the government chooses to inflate police budgets they are investing in a system that continues to exploit you. They are telling you that they will use violence as a means to attain their economic interests. Economic interests that will not benefit you & money that will never touch your community. They say, if you do not fall in line you will be, harassed, surveilled, beaten, jailed or killed. All at the cost of maintaining the status quo of capitalism. When we defund the police we are taking money used for violence & exploitation and turning it into resources for people to live. For people to live with dignity, by making the basic needs to sustain life accessible to all. Survival is not a commodity. Investing in our communities is a human right.
