Sunday at the UK Arnold was given over to the dark art of equipped bench press with 16,000 euros in prize money up for grabs. Just as with the previous days, this competition was scored on GL points. The women kicked off and big numbers went on the board straight away. Agata Sitko of Poland needs no introduction at this point. She might not have been around for years but she’s certainly packed a lot into a short career. She opened with a slow and but steady 200kg, already a personal best. Hildeborg Hugdal of Norway is one of the biggest benchers in the IPF and she laid down a marker with a massive 215kg. Upset though for the favourite, Sonja Stefanie Krueger who missed her 195kg opener and did not manage to get one in. Sitko ultimately went 3 for 3 and hit the junior world record and open European record of 220kg. This proved impossible for anyone to catch and Hugdal was didn’t manage to improve on that massive opener. She didn’t let the crowd down though and she was close with an attempt at the biggest bench ever in the IPF – 235.5kg. Maj Rames of Denmark had a good day, pressing 155kg for third place and GB’s Ellie Steel and Poland’s Zuzanna Kula took the rest of the prize money places. This was a hard act to follow but the men’s class threw some monster weights around. Poland’s Rafal Zalewski in the 93s opened with 290kg – it looked difficult to touch and was a slow press out but it was enough to stay ahead of the German shw, Rene Gross, who took 310kg for a spin for his first. Top ranked bencher, Norway’s Per Marius Hole however, struggled a little when his opening attempt of 350kg just would not go. Huge relief for him when he got it on his second attempt and shot straight to the top of the table and, even though he missed his third of 370kg, this was enough for him to go home with 4,000 euros. Zalewski held onto second place with 297.5kg and Gross managed to fend off Finland’s Eetu Kumpulainen with a strong looking 325kg third. Kumpulainen got all his lifts in and quietly slid up the rankings finishing on 260kg for 4th place. Meanwhile, British newcomer Keelum Walton finished in the money, with a huge personal best of 315kg for 5th place.

The Masters World Championships start one week from today and we have some big names coming to Canada! The classic lifters start us off on 8th October and multiple time world champion, Kimberly Walford has to be the favourite for best classic M1 lifter. She will need to push though to stay ahead of a strong field that includes Cicera Tavares and Monique Boddie. LS McClain is top ranked in the classic men’s M1 competition and he is looking like the one to beat there. There will be challenges though with former world champions and world record holders all over the roster. On 13th October, the focus moves to the equipped championship and it’s great to see the home nation field such a strong team. Equipped lifting must be thriving in Canada! You can find all the information about the competition on the event website https://sites.google.com/view/2022masterworlds including nominations, timetables and information regarding the venue. See you in St John’s! Graphic: @strength.journal #IPF #Classic #Equipped #Masters #WorldMasters

Classic deadlift world record for Lya Bavoil FRA with 231kg in the 63kg class. Also took the total world record to 556.5kg #IPF #classic #deadlift #worldrecord #UKArnold

Day 2 of the UK Arnold - classic powerlifting women CONTINUED Carola Garra led at sub-total, nearly 4 GL points ahead of Lya Bavoil who was, in turn, only 1.5 points ahead of her team-mate, Tiffany Chapon. Chapon took the 52kg junior world record total with her 165kg opener. Garra took an easy looking 192.5kg for her first pull which was enough to stay ahead of Bavoil’s opening 210kg deadlift – but only by .05 of a GL point. Game on. Joy Nnamani’s blink-and-you-miss-it 205kg opener moved her all the way up to 4th place in one go – not completely unexpected from the Brit. Into the second round and Chapon looked at ease with 172.5kg. However, Nnamani smoked 220kg, closing the gap to Chapon considerably and also extending Nnamani’s own 57kg world record total to 485kg. Garra’s second pull of 202.5kg looked like she had plenty left in the tank but Bavoil looked focussed and confident with 222.5kg and she re-took the lead by less than half a GL point. Into the third round and Chapon lost 175kg at the top when her grip went but third place still looked fairly secure. Garra came out for 212.5kg to try to take back first place but, just off the floor, disaster! She dropped the bar and clutched at her hamstring. Best wishes Carola - we hope you recover quickly! Nnamani entertained the crowd with a 4xbodyweight deadlift at 230kg to extend her own deadlift AND total world records. This is probably the hardest we’ve seen Joy have to work to finish a pull but finish it she did and then blew kisses to the crowd. Heaviest deadlifts of the day went to GB’s Sophia Ellis and Ziana Azariah, both with 240kg – a European record for Ellis! However, there was no denying that the dominant performance was Lya Bavoil. She may have already won the competition but she wanted more. 231kg went on the bar for a new deadlift world record, a new total world record of 556.5kg and the highest raw GL points score of any woman in the IPF. Tension mounted as she paced at the back of the platform - she looked a little rattled as she set up but the pull was strong and never faltered. Heartache in Sun City, redemption in Birmingham. All hail the queen. #IPF #UKArnold

Classic junior squat world record for Tiffany Chapon FRA with 160kg in the 52kg class. #IPF #junior #classic #squat #WorldRecord #UKArnold

Women’s classic session on Day 2 of the Arnold UK CONTINUED After extending her own squat world record to 213kg, France’s Lya Bavoil led the way heading into bench with team-mate Tiffany Chapon a couple of GL points behind and Italy’s Carola Garra only another half a point back. However, things soon turned around when Garra leapt into the lead with a massive 132.5kg opener. and Chapon’s 92.5kg was enough to move ahead of Bavoil, pushing her down into third. Into the second round and Bavoil took a big jump to 110kg to move back past Chapon who couldn’t improve on her opener. Garra, however, looked superb with 140kg and asked for a world record attempt of 143.5kg for her third. She looked confident approaching the bench and the crowd shouted their support as she pressed it comfortably for a new 63kg world record. Further down the field, Bobbie Butters took 110kg in the 63kg class for a new British record and clung on to 4th place, just a couple of points ahead of Italy’s Chiara Bernardi. With 5,500 Euros in prize money up for grabs and some of the IPF’s top deadlifters in the field, tension mounted as we moved into deadlifts. TO BE CONTINUED #IPF #UKArnold
