Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya

In this recent Swara article, Santiago Legarre waxes lyrical about the incredible big cats to be found on Ol Pejeta, home to leopards, cheetahs and seven lion prides. Legarre laments the “withdrawal symptoms” he felt during the lockdown and so describes how he delighted in our “sofa safaris”, virtual game drives that hundreds of people from around the world took part in. On one such sofa safari around a thousand people were able to witness the antics of a sub-adult cheetah prowling through the grass. We cannot help but agree with Legarre’s elation regarding the opening up of tourist locations, the magic of being in the bush, just meters away from one of Africa’s finest predators is unparalleled. #CatsOfOlPejeta #Predator #OlPejeta #Cheetah #Lion #Leopard #Cats #CatLovers #Safari #SofaSafari #OlPejeta #WildlifeConservation #Nature #KeepYourCuriosityWild #Wilderness 📸: @Ola Jennersten

Did you hear about the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, put together by Tusk Trust? On October 3rd, 88 teams of wildlife rangers from across Africa competed in a 21 km race through the varied terrains of their patrol regions. To strengthen their heroic efforts, over 2,000 supporters from 80 countries ran with them and raised over half a million pounds for rangers across the continent. The winners were the Laikipia Lion Rangers, who completed the course in just two hours and 21 minutes! What an incredible effort, well done to all, and enormous thanks to those who participated in, and contributed to, this incredible feat! Rangers are absolutely vital to wildlife conservation; these unsung heroes risk their lives daily to protect endangered species and so, to them, thank you!   #WildlifeRangerChallenge #Run #WildlifeConservation #Nature #Rangers #Wilderness #TuskTrust #RhinoConservation #Wildlife

Dr. Stephen Ngulu, Head Veterinarian at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, recently did a podcast with Alexandra Kosmides, talking about the 'sixth extinction' which is currently taking place. In the podcast, Dr. Ngulu explains more about the health of Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, and the process of collecting oocytes which happened in August 2020. Please open the link in our bio to hear more about the plight of the northern white rhino. #OlPejeta #NorthernWhiteRhino #Conservation #SaveTheRhinos

Here on Ol Pejeta, we are firm believers in the importance of education; it is fundamental for development. One of the many adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the shutting down of schools throughout the country, placing many students in difficult positions and preventing learning for a large percentage. This is why generous contributions such as the recent donation by the Nobelity Project, founded by long time supporters and friends, Turk (@turkpipkin) and Christy Pipkin and the Kenyan Education Fund, are so hugely appreciated. This project, in collaboration with Ol Pejeta and St Monica Munyaka Girls’ Secondary School, will provide 1,000 revision books for over sixteen schools both in our community and elsewhere. This shows how beneficial conservation can be to local communities as funds raised may contribute to remarkable projects such as this. #NobelityProject #CommunityDevelopment #Education #CommunityEmpowerment #KeepKidsInSchool #Philanthropy #FutureConservationists #Books #Learning #School #Kenya #Africa

We raised US$4,400 on Giving Day for Apes, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of all of those who donated. This year has seen so many amazing acts of kindness around the world, and we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have these wonderful supporters who care so much. The residents of Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and all of us, say thank you, thank you. #GivingDayForApes #MightyCause #SweetwatersChimpanzeeSanctuary #WildlifeConservation #Nature #Chimpanzee #PASA #GreatApes #ArcusFoundation Photo: @riothephotographer

Speke's weavers really do "speak" a lot! They fall under the passerine birds, which are also known as songbirds. They are very noisy, especially when in their nesting frenzy, which mostly occurs during the rainy season. The more refined, beautiful and loud the male's song, the higher his chance of attracting a female, and mating with her. The weaving part - building the nest - is also done by the male and later on, the female comes into line the nest to make it as comfortable as possible for when she's brooding. As the males work hard in weaving the nest, female Speke's weavers watch them check how skillful they are. If a male is not as talented as he should be, he is denied the right to mate with her. #OlPejeta #OlPejetaEscapes #birds #bird_captures #birdlovers #birdwatchers #birding 📸: @dylanhabil / Ol Pejeta

"I truly love this Earth. A big part of my energy and thoughts go to the effort to honor and say thank you to the beautiful loving force that gives all life and entrusted Earth to us." We are totally thrilled to have @kristinbauer joining us for today's #SofaSafari, at 6 pm EAT. Kristin's approach to making change is truly inspiring, noting "I have come to suspect that modern heroism is usually more mundane." It's all in the small ways that we vote for the planet we want to live in. Please do join us this evening for another wonderful virtual safari on Ol Pejeta. #WildlifeConservation #Nature #PlanetEarth #ModernHeroism #ChangeForGood #EcoWarrior #Change #Inspiration #Instagood #OlPejeta

Giving Day for Apes 2020 has been promising so far and here on Ol Pejeta we are incredibly grateful for all your help, as always. Do you remember this cheeky young lady? It's Bella! She was rescued in 2018 from Guinea Bissau with Bo. Both of them were terrified when they arrived, but after careful integration with the group, have fully settled in and are enjoying life, as they should. With your help, we can help more young chimpanzees like them, who are still waiting to be rescued. There's still time to donate to our campaign, money which will go towards ensuring the current residents of Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary are well taken care of, and potentially helping those we've yet to meet. #PASA #OlPejeta #WildlifeConservation #Chimpanzee #Apes #WildlifeCharity #TheArcusFoundation

Happy Giving Day for Apes! Today is for raising awareness, for donating, for thinking about these incredible creatures, so similar to us, and so remarkably intelligent. Chimpanzees face a lot of problems in the wild, from habitat destruction to the illegal wildlife trade, as well as diseases and hunting. But you can help; by donating to our campaign today you can contribute to the work done by Ol Pejeta’s Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and help make up for some of the wrongs these amazing animals have suffered at the hands of humans. #GivingDayForApes #SweetwatersChimpanzeeSanctury #PASA #OlPejeta #WildlifeConservation #Chimpanzee #Apes #WildlifeCharity #TheArcusFoundation
