As part of the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France today, i participated in the CEO Summit alongside key figures in global business, civil society and public service. We discussed the need to move from commitment to action in building a nature - positive future. I presented Malawi Government's policy of inclusion in national forest restoration initiatives recognising that whilst commercial interests do pose a challenge in our quest for a greener future, by working together with businesses, we can achieve a more sustainable environmental sweet spot. #iucncongress #Malawi #MakeMalawiGreenAgain

We had an audience with H.E. Dr Lazarus Chakwera and a team from MWI Corporation led by its Vice President Mr William E Bucknam. MWI Corporation is a leading water pump manufacturer widely renowned for its innovative SolarPedalflo rural water-supply system. The pump can produce 12,000 litres of filtered, chlorinated, and pressurized water using sun power eliminating the need for an electrical connection. The discussion centred on finding appropriate and renewable technologies for supplying safe water to the people in line with UN Sustainable Goal No. 6 which is to ensure clean water and sanitation services for all. #Malawi #CleanWaterForAll

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera as he opened the National Green Climate Conference in Lilongwe today held under the theme: Collective Responsibility for Enhanced Climate Action in Malawi. The conference is aimed at exploring ways of advancing coordinated efforts aimed at mitigating and addressing the impact of climate change in the country. Active citizenry is a core element of any national mindset change process. We have a huge fight against the devastating effects caused by deforestation. Entire livelihoods and societies are threatened. I am confident, together, we will save our forests for future generations. Those before us left us such a wonderful national green inheritance. Let us have a heart to care for our children and their children's children. Lets not leave them a dessert when we found plenty. I therefore appeal to all patriotic Malawians to help spread the word. We are now in full swing with our multifaceted approach/interventions to charcoal substitution. As part of urgent and interim measures to stop our desperate state of deforestation, we are advocating for a national shift to the use of alternative fuel/energy for cooking by Malawians instead of charcoal the production of which is worsening deforestation and leading to accelerated desertification. These interventions include the promotion and distribution of Gas and Briquettes both of which are not entirely environmentally optimal but will go a long way to save our degraded forests. At MK85 per kg, the briquettes should be cheaper than charcoal and burns equally good. I therefore encourage all Malawians to change our mindset when it comes to cooking fuel/energy sources as we now have cheaper and better alternatives. Zinali chonchi lero ku Mzimba. Launch of Briquettes Production Plant.

I traveled to Mzimba today where i officially commissioned a Briquette Making Plant at Raiply Malawi Limited. According to Raiply CEO, Krishna Das, the plant cost US$1m and has capacity to produce over 60 metric tones of briquettes per day creating an additional 61 jobs. I commended Raiply for supporting government efforts of conserving forests through the mass production of briquettes, an alternative energy sources. The briquettes, which are made of saw dust, come in different sizes and cost K85/kg. They burn as good as charcoal when used for cooking. The plant is also contributing to the job creation agenda of the #Malawi Government. In attendance were Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’Mbelwa V, Mzimba District Council representatives and officials from Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources.
