AI tools like ChatGPT offer many opportunities — if you happen to speak a language they support. But they’re useless to billions of people who don't speak or work in Western languages. Researchers and startups from Africa and other parts of the world are changing that.

On Monday, Chile marked 50 years since the coup led by General Augusto Pinochet ended Salvador Allende's presidency and ushered in a brutal military dictatorship that lasted two decades.
 Pinochet's military regime violated human rights, and involved the persecution and torture of his opponents. Thousands were killed or disappeared, and many Chileans mourn the 'desaparecidos' to this day.    According to numerous polls, some Chileans believe that Pinochet was a good leader who led the country forward. Russia on Sunday wrapped up widely denounced regional and municipal elections, including in regions annexed from Ukraine. Russia's Central Election Commission said Monday that the country's ruling party won the most votes in occupied Ukrainian regions. The Council of Europe, Europe's leading rights group, called the week-long vote a flagrant violation of international law. EU top diplomat Josep Borrell said in a statement that the EU strongly rejected "this further futile attempt by Russia to legitimize or normalize its illegal military control and attempted annexation of parts of Ukrainian territories." "These illegal so-called 'elections' in Ukraine took place amidst Russia’s forced and illegal granting of passports, including to children, forced transfer and deportation, widespread and systematic violations and abuses of human rights as well as intimidation and increasing repression of Ukrainian citizens by Russia," Borrell added. Kyiv and its allies say the elections were an illegal attempt to tighten Moscow's grip over annexed regions in Ukraine's south and east. On Friday, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry had urged other countries not to recognize the results of what it called "fake elections." Electoral competition was limited, as authorities blocked candidates from Russia's main opposition from running. Stanislav Andreychuk, co-chair of Golos, a voter rights' group designated a "foreign agent" by the Russian government, said the elections showed instances of vote rigging in many parts of the country and were "not real elections." The Kremlin says opinion polls and numerous election wins show that Putin is by far the most popular politician in Russia and that elections are free and fair.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the coming days," the Kremlin has confirmed. Kim is reportedly traveling by train from Pyongyang to the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, according to South Korean media reports. Despite denials by both Pyongyang and Moscow, the United States has said talks are advancing for North Korea to supply arms to Russia, which has used up vast stocks of weapons in its more than 18 months of war against Ukraine. North Korea is likely to negotiate food and raw materials in exchange. North Korea is one of the few countries to have openly supported Russia since the invasion of Ukraine last year, and Putin pledged last week to "expand bilateral ties in all respects in a planned way by pooling efforts." Kim's last trip abroad in 2019 was also to Vladivostok. After the collapse of North Korea's nuclear disarmament talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Kim traveled for his first summit there with Putin.

The death toll has risen following a massive earthquake in Morocco. So far, at least 2,497 people have been recorded as victims of the disaster. Officials expect that number to increase as rescuers find more victims in the rubble.⁣

Germany is warning people against taking part in online challenges that involve eating extra spicy food. The cautionary message, issued by Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), comes as German outlet Tagesschau reported that one student in Germany had to be hospitalized for taking part in the so-called “One Chip Challenge.”⁣ ⁣ A number of people participating in such social media contests around the world have also required medical treatment.⁣ ⁣ The German agency said that in the past, the consumption of excessively spicy food such as hot chili sauces or chili extract has been reported to cause "mucus membrane irritation, nausea, vomiting and high blood pressure."⁣ ⁣ The "One Chip Challenge" or "Hot Chip Challenge" has been particularly popular on TikTok and involves eating a single tortilla chip made from two of the hottest chilis in the world.⁣ ⁣ For more, check the link in our bio.

Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation, after a controversial kiss which saw him accused of sexual assault.⁣ ⁣ Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s victory in the Women's World Cup final last month, which the footballer said was not consensual. Germany bested Serbia 83:77 on Sunday in the Philippines to seal the FIBA Basketball World Cup title. It's Germany's first-ever win in the competition, with their best past performance a semifinal defeat in 2002. The match was on a knife's edge throughout the first half and the two teams went back to the locker rooms locked together on 47 points apiece. But Germany put together a strong run after the break and opened up a 12-point lead going into the final quarter.
