Rolex Middle Sea Race Fleet is Hotting Up 🔥 Some 61 yachts have entered, with crews from Australia, the United States, Canada and most of Europe slated to participate. The fleet comprises the usual array of professionals, amateurs and adventurers. At the faster end, debutant Frank Slootman’s MOD70 Snowflake has been joined by Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi 70, on the Italian multihull’s fifth appearance. Among the monohulls, the 30.5 metre Leopard 3 is currently the largest entry, making a welcome return after a five-year absence. Within the main body of IRC entries, the impressive two-time winning Maltese co-skipper combo, Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, are back hoping for a three-peat, with Satariano’s latest Artie. The cut-off date for entry is officially Friday, 23 September 2022, but the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), has retained the discretion to accept late entries up to Friday, 30 September. This year we're pleased to welcome Jonathan McKee and Red Ruby the SunFast 3300 from the United States, one of the most anticipated entries taking part this year. 🥇🥉 McKee is a two-time Olympic medallist in the Flying Dutchman (gold, 1984) and the 49er (bronze, 2000). He brings experience from several America’s Cup campaigns and 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race with Il Mostro. This will be McKee’s first time at this event. “I have wanted to compete in the Rolex Middle Sea Race for a long time. It is one of the few classic ocean races that I have never sailed,” explains McKee. “The course is really beautiful and very interesting tactically. There is usually a huge variety of conditions, from calms to gales. The event always draws a top field, and I am really excited.” "I love racing double handed because it is a beautiful challenge. Racing with only two requires each sailor to really have a complete skill set. You have to steer, trim, navigate, get the sails up and down, all with only two sailors. Very sad to learn about the dismasting of the Trimaran Ultim’Emotion 2 during the Newport Bermuda Race but thrilled to see the crew are all safe and well after motoring back to Newport escorted by US Coast Guard. 🙏🏼 Read the full update from Bertrand Jasiński👇 “The ocean teaches humility.... Regatta Newport Bermuda Race we were short of five 600-mile Rolex regattas until the "Grand Slam". Ideal weather and wind conditions. When after 2 hours from the start in full fog 100m from the left board, we overtook Argo, which so far has always been better than us, we were convinced that nothing could stop us. We felt we had a chance to win the race and set a track record. The euphoria lasted for 150 miles. We covered this distance suddenly in 6.5 hours. 21-25kts winds 10 miles ahead of Argo. Shot all of a sudden. The right posterior joint of the middle and right swimmer is breaking. Fatigue of the material. It's made up like a house of cards while detaching from the swimmer. The mast devoid of a backstab is placed on the left board. At the same time, the front joint of these swimmers is breaking. This is the end of the race for us. The most important thing is that nobody was hurt. The trimaran structure on the two floats is still safe and stable. Cutting off mast along with main sail and J1. 160 miles left from shore at 900m depth. At the same time mayday, mayday by satelite phone because with mast we lost all antennas and radio. Getting started on the motor back to Newport. After 10 hours we are joined by U.S. Coast Guard which for the next 27 hours convoys us to the port providing fuel and being ready to react if the yacht in two parts stopped being safe. Many thanks and respect for the help and safety you guaranteed us. And the weather conditions to return on the engine with trimaran in two parts against the wind were not easy. The ocean teaches humility. The ocean is also carrying it, which everyone reads in their own way. Thank you for this lesson and another experience. Rolex Middle Sea Race Fleet Starts to Climb 📈 With little more than four months to go to the start of the 43rd Rolex Middle Sea Race on Saturday, 22 October, the fleet is growing daily. Some 49 yachts from 21 countries have entered the Mediterranean’s premier 606-mile classic to date. Comprising monohulls and multihulls, fully-crewed and double-handed, and ranging in size from the 28 metre Orsa Maggiore (Italy) down to the 9.98m Azuree 33 Nuestro (Italy), the entrants represent the broad spectrum of offshore sailing. At the same stage last year, a similar number had entered with the final fleet count reaching 114. The Royal Malta Yacht Club, organiser since the first race 1968, is taking the current count as a positive indicator of another sizeable participation in its flagship race. The race to be first to finish in the multihull fleet is shaping up nicely with 24m Ultim’ Emotion 2 entered by Cosimo Malesci (Italy) facing a head-to-head with Frank Slootman’s Dutch 21.2m MOD70 Snowflake (formerly Beau Geste and before that Phaedo3, which took line honours and set a multihull race record in 2015).
