I made this Guyana tea towel as a souvenir and way of pulling some of my drawings out of my ipad and into the real world. All of the drawings except five were drawn after my trip and were included in my newsletter commemorating it. I drew five new landmarks to be inclusive and representative of the many people who call Guyana home. Guyana is the land of six peoples; Amerindian (Indigenous), African, Indian, Chinese, Portuguese and European. In the word Guyana, we have a map, Kaieteur Falls, Sugar Cane, our national dish Pepperpot, our national animal Jaguar and out national flower, the second largest waterlily in the world the Victoria Amazonica. Guyana is both South American and Caribbean. Sign up for my newsletter (l!nk 1n b10) to read more about the landmarks because the caption is too long for insta.

I have made this Tatreez card for my Dad for Fathers Day. It is part of a traditional design from Ramallah, P*l3st!ne. The original has a rooster alongside the chicks and hearts I just didnt have enough space. While I made this, I thought about how P*l3stin!an men are demonised and seen as justified deaths. I thought about all the videos we have seen of Dads and Grandads who are screaming in agony over the loss of their children/grandchildren. How they held their lifeless bodies with so much love and care. We have seen so many instances of Dads going out to get food, or try to get a treat for their child amongst all the starvation, and when they returned their child had been killed by bombs or snipers. I think of the Dads carrying pieces of their child’s bodies in bags. The cruelty and racism we have witnessed is soul destroying. I think of all the children who have been orphaned in the past 8 months and all the many who were orphaned before by Israel’s regime. Israel sees men as threats and children as potential threats. The people of P*l3st!ne just want to live, to love, thrive and survive. I dedicate this card to all P*l3stin!an fathers and all the P*l3stin!an children. My Dad does everything he can to give me a happy life, to protect me and care for me, P*l3st!nian Dad’s cant protect or save their children, only attempt to care for them amongst the genocide and destruction. It’s unacceptable and unjustifiable, it’s heartbreaking and gut wrenching.

It is Guyana’s 58th Independence Day 🇬🇾 so I thought I would share some of my drawings from my first time visiting last year. You can see them and read about the adventure we had in my newsletter (l!nk !n B!0). A quick summary based on these illustrations we explored Georgetown (including the National Museum, Roy Geddes Steel Pan Museum and Guyana Amazon Tropical Bird Society), Mahaica, Lethem, West Bank Demerara, Essequibo/Parika, South Rupununi (@wichabai), North Rupununi, Rainforest (@iwokrama_international). This day also marks the 60th anniversary of the Wismar Massacres where racial tensions between colonised communities saw East Indian homes and businesses burnt and destroyed with people killed and attacked. We are the land of six peoples: Amerindian, African, Indian, Chinese, Portuguese and European no matter who tries to cause division ❤️💚💛🖤🤍

In February I shared my post about the @threads.of.solidarity digital tapestry project where names of those killed in G*z* are being embroidered to commemorate the tragic, unjust and premature end to their lives. Im so proud of my community because so many of you reached out to them to request names, to use your embroidery skills for an important cause. They reached out to me and thanked me because you not only asked for names but i think some offered other skills to help how you could. Im so proud to have grown a community of such caring and empathetic people who want to do an action, even of it feels small, but represents so much love and passion for justice. For these people to not be forgotten, for them not to be another statistic in Isr*3ls relentless violence and Apartheid, for love, sorrow, pain, anger and compassion to be poured into the memories of these people we don’t know but feel so deeply disgusted and heartbroken for the loss of life. Yesterday Hanecdote (my business) turned 12, an age which two of these children will never reach. What a sick and twisted world we live in that can allow this, fund this and justify this. 600,000 children amongst the 1.5 million people displaced in Rafah which is now under attack and ground invasion, with the border crossing closed completely. RIP to Rawan Saeed Youssef Al-Mutawq aged 14, Youssef Saeed Youssef Al-Mutawq aged 12, Zakaria Khabbab Muhammad Nabil Al-Mutawq aged 9 and Raneed Abdul Rahman Maher Al-Mutawq aged 8.

I know Im not the only one who is completely overwhelmed, angered, disgusted, heartbroken and shaken to the core by the devastation and violence we have witnessed for the past 6 months. The unrelenting violence and horror has almost been too much to believe and comprehend, except we have been witnessing it all with our own eyes, every single day, through our screens. I honestly cant comprehend the pain, horrors, trauma, death, cruelty, dehumanisation and terror that P*l3stinians have faced, not just for the past 6 months but the 75 years before that too. For months we have been calling for ceasefires, ends to selling weapons, end to the occupation and freedom for P*l3stinians. We have been called Ant*s3mites, t3rrorist sympathisers, t3rrorist lovers by heartless people who have no empathy. Peaceful protests have been called hate marches. Why does it take the deaths of 6 international aid workers, and their P*l3stinian driver for the media classes and some Western govs to say anything against Isr*3l? Isr*3l didn’t make a mistake, and they arent sorry. They targeted these aid workers in three separate cars/locations. Every death is a tragedy and a crime against humanity. Over 30,000 P*l3stinians have been killed, and its likely a much, much higher number because societal systems have been completely devastated. How are deaths from Isr*3li military, starvation and medical neglect being counted with up to date figures amongst constant attacks and displacement?

This is the quilt block I made for An Inch For Each of the Dead. A community memorial quilt organised by @sydney.makes where each square represents a beautiful, rich, vast and individual life killed in G*za. Its harrowing to think of and see the destruction and dehumanisation P*l3stinians have faced for over 75 years. Every life taken is a tragedy from the babies who had their chance at life cruelly and needlessly stolen from them to the elderly who experienced the 1948 Nakba and occupation ever since. I used part of a keffiyeh i bought @p21_gallery exhibition called From P*l3stine With Art, as well as bandanas and tie-dyed fabric I have been working with as part of my patchwork experimentation. I chose a heart bandana instead of paisley because i wanted love to be literally in the piece.

Feeling deeply inspired by Tatreez, I have made my Mum part of this Mother’s Day
Feeling deeply inspired by Tatreez, I have made my Mum part of this Mother’s Day design for her card. The bird and chicken designs come from Ramallah and are available alongside a library of other designs @tirazain.initiative . Why not make some Tatreez cards for your loved ones and share the story of P*l3stinian Embroidery and how important it is. Embroidering something for someone shows love, dedication, patience and passion. Sharing P*l3stinian embroidery and learning from P*l3stinians is a way of showing solidarity and appreciation for a people who have been dehumanised and are experiencing a genocide and Nakba since 1948, including cultural and material genocide. It’s unbearable to see the pain of mothers and families across P*l3stine and in the diaspora, all the children who have been orphaned and displaced.

@threads.of.solidarity is a memorial project organised by Indu, Kamil, Rahi and Taab to embroider the names of people Martyred in G*za and put together in the form of a digital tapestry. You can contact them via threadsofsolidarity@gmail.com to be given names and information about the format to submit. They wanted us to use gauze (medical material originating in G*za) and thread the colours of the P*l3stinian flag. I chose to border the gauze with cream blanket stitch because i associate this stitch with comfort and warmth. I listened to a P*l3stinian Resistance playlist while I stitched the names of three 22 year old relatives, possibly triplets, maybe they are cousins. Three young lives stolen by violent occupation unable to ever live out their wildest dreams. Were they going to be artists, or engineers, or farmers or teachers or chefs or parents? For 17 years of their short 22 year lives they lived under Isr*3li siege and blockade. Rest in Peace to Madga Muhammad Abdel Majeed Al-Astal, Muhammad Mahmoud Ahmed Al-Astal and Muhammad Nasser Sulaiman Al-Astal, all killed aged 22. Notice that all the names on the poster for this project are all from the Al-Astal family. Entire bloodlines have been wiped off the civil registry, multiple generations gone forever.

Reposting because it was unfairly removed for copyright infringement and heard nothing back about my appeal. The video !n my b!0 by @palmuseum interviews many P*l3stinian women who embroider the traditional Tatreez, many of whom are living in exile in Jordan and Lebanon. These wonderful women share their passions and connections to this ancient art form. Some have set up organisations for women in refugee camps across P*l3stine as a form of community building, skill sharing, educational programs as well as generating income for the makers. The dedication is something I can truly appreciate as a fellow embroiderer, we do it because we are so deeply in love with the process. Women would sew outside in nature, inspired by the colours they saw around them. All the motifs have a meaning and many are specific to the region they come from as well as the use of certain colours. “Embroidery means peace of mind” said one of the embroideries who is Disabled. I could relate to this feeling of calm meditation which comes with the repetitive nature of stitching. Maryam Malakha, Yaffa featured in my drawing said “I felt that we were not doing our heritage justice. How among all the things that P*l3stine has lost, we’re also losing our material culture. So I started thinking about this until one day I stumbled across a foreign magazine. In it was Miss Isr*3l, wearing a Beersheba dress, and it said “My Grandmothers dress from Beersheba” Her Grandmother? I told myself, they have stolen everything from us and this is the only thing left to take. So i got excited about working with embroidery and told myself, I am unable to fight with a rifle so I will fight with a needle” Bir Seb’a (Beersheba) was a P*l3stinian town which was violently taken over by Isr*3li troops in 1948 during the Nakba. Thats what galvanised her to be an activist and protector of P*l3stinian heritage.
