I’ve never been to Elmina Castle. I’ve been offered many times, but on my first trip in 2022 I missed a group tour bus headed to Cape Coast. In lieu of taking the trip to the slave castles some of my newly made friends in ghana offered me a tour of a different part of our history. We visited the final resting place of Dr Kwame Nkrumah: the Great Pan Africanist. I learned that Ghana was called the “Gold Coast” up until the year 1957 because of the gold Britain would extract from the region as one of its colonies. And in that year on March 6th through protest and political action, a young Ghanaian named Kwame Nkrumah was elected president and formed the self governing country of Ghana. This was the first but not last country on the continent to remove themselves from colonial rule and operate in self determination. President Nkrumah went on to preach independence throughout Africa, forming coalitions internationally, working with black American leaders through the civil rights movement. He formed the country with influences of Pan Africanism, embodying the truth that there is a collective black suffering globally that can only be solved through collective organizing. He was also a scientific socialist and taught class solidarity and communal aid. He spoke of the dangers of neo colonialism and western imperialism in the very future we see today. What I witnessed changed my way of thinking, my missions and my identity. Each of the 7 trips I’ve taken to Ghana since my first trip, I make time to pay my respects to the great Pan Africanist Kwame Nkrumah. This trip I bought a painting of him and brought it home to my children. We had a long conversation about him. I believe I learned a lot of things late in life that would have helped me understand my experiences and the world around me. I’m not worried about these girls though, they know where they come from
