Something a little different today, although still from the class of Chondrichtyes and an elasmobranch (that’s cartilaginous fish - sharks, rays, skates or sawfish - to you and me). Behold the round ribbontail ray (Taeniura meyeni), a species of stingray, photographed off KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, at the Aliwal Shoal. 'Where else?’ I hear you cry. Well, they are reasonably widespread, and are found throughout the nearshore waters of the tropical Indo-Pacific, as well as off islands in the eastern Pacific. You may also hear them referred to as the black spotted ray, black-blotched stingray, black-spotted stingray, fantail ray, fantail stingray, giant reef ray, blotched fantail ray, speckled stingray and even the bull ray. Generally nocturnal, this species of ray can be solitary or gregarious, and actively preys on small, benthic (i.e. bottom-dwelling) molluscs, crustaceans, and bony fishes. This one is partially hidden in the sand as we had obviously roused it from its hiding place during the day. This slow-reproducing species is threatened by commercial fishing, both targeted and as bycatch, and habitat degradation across much of its range. Getting our attention - a Gansbaai white shark in all its glory. This was taken by the island.
