A week ago I had just arrived back home…from home. I am holding a cold Kalik Beer. I’m smiling at my niece and nephew. I’m enjoying the sea breeze and the sound of the ocean. It’s speaking to me in the background. I have sat on beaches in the Bahamas for large part of my childhood. I know her voice. I know the language of ocean waves. She’s telling me at this exact moment that everything will be alright. That no matter the heaviness of the moment, my shoulders will not break. She’s telling me that time is both pregnant and barren. It gives birth. It takes away. When it’s pregnant it feels like it will always be that way. She’s a chameleon. A shape shifter. Yesterday she held somebody in her. Today they are gone. Beyond time’s grasp. And just like the pregnant days, the barren days feel like they’ll last forever. But they won’t either. So the ocean pulses on the shores and quiets my heart. I just got back last night from Nassau, Bahamas. I was there to see my sister buried on Friday afternoon with rain in the air and sun in the in between. She was buried in a little settlement named Fox Hill. She came to this very beach that I am standing on, a week before she passed. The owners of the property were friends of hers. They were kind enough to not only provide this haven of peace but to physically take her down to the water to sit. And sit she did. She sat in a chair right in the space that I am staring at. The water is around her feet. And her head is facing East and her shoulders look erect. She looks like she’s saying hello and goodbye at the same time. Elegance is all around her. I’m staring at the spot willing the past to become the present but it won’t obey my wish. So I stare at the spot where I last saw her sit. I have the photo. She looks majestic. People like Wendy were always too good for this world. But she is exactly what this world needs. Love. Kindness. Generosity. Beauty & grace. The owner of this property took this photo of me. I didn’t know she was taking it. But I am so grateful that she did. I am standing at attention staring through time when love sat on this beach.
