When we asked over 1,500 Black LGBTQ+ young people to share with us their stories recently, their answers reminded us of the heartbreaking reality: systemic racism, homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination lead to increased mental health disparities impacting LGBTQ youth. Furthermore, the results from our newest research reveal how discrimination has had a profound impact on the mental health and suicide risks among Black LGBTQ+ young people ⬇️ 📈Over one in five Black transgender, nonbinary, or questioning young people reporting a suicide attempt in the past year—a rate more than double that of their Black cisgender LGBQ peers. 🫂High rates of discrimination and its direct correlation with higher rates of suicide attempts, underlining the critical need for supportive and affirming environments. 🌈The critical role of community and chosen family in mitigating racial trauma and anti-LGBTQ+ oppression among Black LGBTQ+ young people. Nex Benedict (he/him/they/them) deserved to live to see Zero Discrimination Day. Instead, we are left with the legacy of a beautiful, transgender, nonbinary, Two-Spirit young person who was stolen from the world. Nex made a profound impact on all of us, and ignited a nationwide conversation about safer schools for transgender and nonbinary students, and creating a safer country for trans people. This Zero Discrimination Day, we honor Nex Benedict, a student at Owasso County High School, who deserved better. This Zero Discrimination Day, we honor every trans, nonbinary, and queer young person who has had to fight to be seen, accepted, and loved.
