If you’re considering elevating your photography using composites, there are a few important things you’ll need to keep in mind to create realistic ones. 1️⃣ Keep Lighting Consistent when choosing the photos to blend together. This allows you to make the blended photos look like they were lit by the same light source. So if the background shot was taken in mid day sun without a cloud in the sky, and the other image you’re trying to blend is from a cloudy day, the images aren’t going to match well. 2️⃣Perspective… it needs to be the same. If you take a background image taken from a ladder looking down on the scene, but the subjects were photographed from a camera looking up at them. The images will not look right once combined. 3️⃣ Color: if the color tone and temperature of the images you are blending are different, they’ll easily stand out from one another. And this doesn’t just go for the midtowns, the color tones of the highlights need to match with the highlights from the other shots, as well as the shadows. A great way to fix this is by applying a gradient map for color grading to the entire image at the end of your edit. 4️⃣ Contrast: If the contrast isn’t consistent, you’re likely to know it’s a composited image. So at the end of your edit, some artists like to brighten the black point of the whole image (all the layers) using a curves adjustment layer. The answer? Well… it’s kinda hard to explain… it’s both! Photoshop AI…. It’s an extremely polarizing subject for #photographers. This image was created completely with generative fill as a sort of test case. It’s part of my PhotoshopAI bundle that I sell. In my life, my tendency has been to avoid change and new things. But friends… learn from my mistakes, AI is not going away so let’s learn to be early adopters! And if you use it right, it can shave HOURS off your editing time! It DEFINITELY has its #genfail moments, but when it works, it’s amazing. And for those worried it will take their jobs, it’s FAR from that point right now. But you DO need to start playing around with it, to see what it can do and how magically it removes objects that used to take ages to remove. Perfection SOOC isn’t a thing, sorry… SOOC stands for “Straight Out of Camera” Tell me if you agree or disagree below! The notion that people learn how to be a photographer solely behind the camera is not true at all. That’s only half the learning. The other half is learning how to DEVELOP your photos. This is all done using Photoshop and Lightroom. If you shoot RAW especially, you need to learn how to tone your highlights, shadows, blacks and whites. You need to learn what style, or mood you want your images to portray. And if you don’t believe me on how important it is to learn the develop portion of being a good photographer, then maybe you’ll take it from Ansel Adams himself, who started all of his seminars by telling his students HALF of what you learn about being a better photographer isn’t behind the lens, but in the darkroom. Developing your images (whether in analog or digitally) is a huge part of being a photographer and so many people forget that. It’s called Quaran-toddler and it was how I felt inside with two toddlers at home during quarantine. I would clean up one mess and three more would be created by the time I turned around. Any parent knows what this feels like! To create this, all you need is the @canonusa connect app (Nikon has a similar phone triggering app) on your phone, a tripod, a constant light source, and you need to be as still as possible while you take the shots. This will help when you layer all the shots on top of one another in @photoshop. I took the photos by triggering the camera using @canonusa’s app. Then you will layer them all on top of each other in @photoshop and mask in the multiple toddlers wherever they may have roamed to make it look like there are many of them! Its a super easy concept but it’s so much fun to do! Make sure to try it and tag me! My top 4 complaints… 1️⃣I spent the first 5 years of my teaching career meticulously fact checking everything I taught in @photoshop to make sure I was teaching the best possible way to do something, but the truth is… there are SO MANY different ways to do the same task in photoshop. It became exhausting wrestling over “am I teaching this right?” “Will attendees approve?” 2️⃣I also had a 💡moment when I realized NO-ONE knows absolutely everything about photoshop. So why am I pretending to known everything just to be a teacher? For example - I don’t ever use the web tools or the (now discontinued) 3d tools. I just never learned them. And once I realized THAT ITS OK not to know everything, it was like overnight my stress about teaching went 💨poof💨. 3️⃣ @photoshop is a BEAST of a program. And everyone is at a different spot along their learning journey. Trying to bang a class out of the park for every single attendee will set you up for disaster. Instead, try to teach to the largest mass of your students. I guarantee you there will be self proclaimed photoshop experts in your class that don’t know what a layer style is and also there will be advanced students who think they have more to learn when they don’t. YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE - so give yourself a break and stop trying to do the impossible. And as @terryleewhite says “never agree to teach an advanced class”. 😂 4️⃣ expect this: there WILL BE MISTAKES. And that’s ok too! Mistakes help students learn how to troubleshoot. One of THE MOST IMPORTANT skills a beginner photoshop user can learn. So turn that into a teachable moment, and trust me when I say your audience will thank you. It’s my birthday! 39 trips around the sun. Some people might immediately rule out a vacation like this with two small kids, but not us. We’ve been coming to #spanishwells for a decade now and it’s definitely my happy place. The island is SMALL, no hotels, no nightclubs, a hand full of restaurants… but that’s what we love about this place. Whenever you’re traveling with kids, safety becomes a top priority and here, it’s literally not a concern at all. It’s one of the safest places I’ve ever been. The water as far our as you can walk is knee high, so I’m also not worried about my littles drowning. So although it’s hard to get to, it’s SO WORTH IT! Thanks to @flysilverairways for always getting us there safely and to Pinder’s taxi for getting us to the island without a hitch… in 10 years. The locals here have known me through two pregnancies and comment on how my kids have grown each time we come. I can’t wait to be back here later this year. As one trip is never enough! This time we’re staying in an amazing bungalow called Sanctuary Cottage and it’s the only rental house on #spanishwellsbahamas with a HEATED pool. And it’s WELL worth it! We also visited a new crafts coop managed by @seagillian_treasures and picked up some unique gifts made right here on Spanish Wells and part of the proceeds support the school crafts program.
