The Burmese peacock softshell turtle, named after the patterns on its shell, is a critically endangered freshwater turtle that’s thought to only be found in Myanmar. Threatened by habitat degradation and human harvesting, its population numbers have dropped by 80% over the past 90 years and are continuing to decrease. Local communities and the international wildlife charity Fauna & Flora have been working to protect them by roping off potential nesting sites around Indawgyi Lake and patrolling the area. On June 14, a patrol team discovered Burmese peacock softshell turtle hatchlings and filmed them, in what is reportedly the first video record of them in the wild. It's estimated that around 100 pilot whales were killed needlessly today in the first hunt. That brings our total to 163 whales killed in 2023. The whales that were just slaughtered were part of a much bigger family, estimated to be around 700 individuals, according to an anonymous local. Did you know that it takes over 11 minutes, and in some cases up to TWO HOURS to harpoon whales to death? Did you also know that the Icelandic whaling permit states “When hunting, equipment must be used that ensures the whale is killed immediately or that the killing takes time in the shortest possible time.” The permit ALSO states “violation of the provisions of the permit letter and any misuse of the permit will result in the suspension of the permit.” These are CLEAR violations of the permit. These whales are being shot at, with up to 4 harpoons, over the course of TWO hours, bleeding to death and suffering immensely. This is not an “immediate” or swift death by any means. @svandissvavarsdottir, the has absolute legal authority to revoke the license based on these findings. But she said she DOESN’T have the authority to stop the slaughter. A new study published on June 6 in the journal Nature Communications found that even under a low-emissions scenario, Arctic summers will be 'practically' ice-free by the 2030s. This study counters the 2021 report by the United Nations' climate change panel, which said that Arctic ice could still be saved if global warming was kept below 2°C. The study examined ice loss that could be attributed to CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions using computer models and compared that to ice loss from natural occurrences, like the intensity of the sun and volcanic eruptions. The study's authors concluded that we should focus on resilience planning due to the likelihood of an extreme scenario. 'By scaling models' sea ice response to greenhouse gases to best match the observed trend in an approach validated in an imperfect model test, we project an ice-free Arctic in September under all scenarios considered, the authors wrote. 'These results emphasize the profound impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on the Arctic, and demonstrate the importance of planning for and adapting to a seasonally ice-free Arctic in the near future. Two pilot whale hunts have taken place in the Faroese Islands so far this spring, slaughtering 60 of the intelligent mammals. More hunts are planned throughout the year. This cruel practice corrals pods, numbering 60 to 100, into a fjord and they’re then dragged on shore with hooks and stabbed to death one by one. These hunts are considered to be a blood sport, one enjoyed by locals. Pilot whales are protected under EU and UK law, but the island’s autonomous status means it sets its own laws and rules. @seashepherduk, one of our amazing partners captures these images from the most recent hunt on May 15th. More than 800m trees have been cut down in the Amazon rainforest in just six years to feed the world’s appetite for Brazilian beef, according to a new investigation, despite dire warnings about the forest’s importance in fighting the climate crisis. The beef industry in Brazil has consistently pledged to avoid farms linked to deforestation. However, the data suggests that 1.7m hectares (4.2m acres) of the Amazon was destroyed near meat plants exporting beef around the world. Animals from “dirty” deforesting ranches are trucked to a supposedly “clean” farm before slaughter, masking their origin. This is known as “cattle laundering.” A clean farm is one with no history of fines or sanctions for deforestation, even if its owner has deforested on other ranches. Meat companies have long said that monitoring the movements between ranches in their complex supply chains is too difficult. Unfortunately, where there is demand there is supply. When profits superceede all else, acts of crime against nature occur—regardless of the laws in place to protect our environment and its biodiversity.
