Matrix ONE: A building design to be demountable ♻️🌍   Check out this video to understand how Matrix ONE could be dismantled in the future to become a source of materials for other buildings!   The building’s digital model, with over 120,000 individual elements, was included in Madaster, an online database that provides a comprehensive material passport – documenting all materials and products used in the building for potential future reuse. Elements are separated into categories based on their expected lifespans, and Matrix ONE’s design allows elements with shorter lifespans to be upgraded or removed without impacting those with longer lifespans. Moreover, both the interior spaces and the technical installations are as flexible as possible thanks to simple connections like screws and bolts that allow elements to be detached or reused as needed.   Thanks to these measures, in the end over 90% out of the 120,000 elements could be reused in the future! As MVRDV partner Frans de Witte explains, ”In the future, we hope this is how all buildings will work – and we’re excited to see Matrix ONE become a standard-bearer in our own office.”

On the social staircase of Matrix ONE, interaction takes centre stage!⁠ 🗣️🗨️👥⁠ ⁠ Located immediately next to the main entrance - encouraging users to choose the stairs over the elevators - a key element of this building is the "social stairs", which feature tribune-style seating for presentations, tables for informal meetings, and coffee stations to create a dynamic space where workers from different industries can mingle and share ideas.⁠ ⁠ The interior design includes multiple lush green walls that are visible through the glass façade, while soft felt finishes elsewhere dramatically reduce sound reverberation, lending a calm and intimate atmosphere.⁠ ⁠ The social staircase is complemented by the building’s amenities, with a ground-floor restaurant and a bar at the top of the staircase. Matrix ONE is now open in Amsterdam Science Park... a perfect example of how research can pave the way to a sustainable future! 🔬🟩⁠ ⁠ As the main hub of the Matrix Innovation Center, this six-storey, 13,000m2 building brings together scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovative companies like Qualcomm, SustainaLab, Photanol, Skytree, and FUL Foods, all working towards sustainable solutions for a better future. ⁠ ⁠ Aiming to set an example for the other buildings on the campus, the building incorporates sustainable thinking from every possible angle, from an ambitious approach to circular economy thinking (which we will showcase in its own post later this week!) to social sustainability and operational energy.⁠ ⁠ A compact shape, internet-connected lighting and heating fixtures, automated sun shades, underground heat and cold storage, and more all help to reduce energy consumption, while 1,000m2 of solar panels on the roof generate a significant portion of the building's energy. From the prominent corner plot of Las Fabri-Casas, you can get a really good of the vibrant El Terreno neighbourhood 👀🪟⁠ ⁠ Across from the white Gomila Center, Las Fabri-Casas is a set of blue row houses with a saw-tooth roof and blue ceramic facades, inspired by the soles of @camper shoes - the brand owned by the project's developer, the Fluxà family.⁠ ⁠ “Renovating the Gomila Center is not only ecologically sustainable, reusing the building in line with principles of circularity, but also offers a reminder of the history of the area.” says founding partner Jacob Van Rijs. ⁠ ⁠ Indeed, the buildings of Project Gomila are energy neutral, using many of the same principles developed for the Passivhaus standard. Take a moment to hang out on the stepping terraces of the Gomila Center 🌞⁠ ⁠ The Fluxà Family, owners of the Mallorca-based @camper shoe brand, purchased a series of neighbouring plots around Plaza Gomila and asked us, along with @grasreynesarquitectos, to develop a renewal plan that echoed Camper’s philosophy of combining heritage with innovation and creativity.⁠ ⁠ The resulting designs, collectively named Project Gomila, aim to recover the essence of a neighbourhood that occupies a lasting place in the memory of many Mallorcans.⁠ ⁠ The largest building, at the heart of the ensemble, is the Gomila Center, a renovation of a 1979 design by architect Pere Nicolau. At MVRDV we don't like to see a "glass ceiling" in our office⁠... but we might try glass floors, walls, desks, and chairs instead! 😜⁠ ⁠ ⁠For 133 Wai Yip Street in Hong Kong, our stripped-down approach to transforming an existing factory building creates a space that's both raw and sleek.⁠ ⁠ Openness and transparency are also provided by the main material used - glass! Old and new are therefore easily distinguished, while the building's inner workings are on full display. The free flow of movement within is exposed thanks to glass walls and glass lifts in glass shafts; even the fire stairs are encased in fire-resistant glass.⁠ ⁠ Within the building, we also designed one model office to stand as an example for tenants to install in their workspaces if they desire. ⁠Look through the openings of Future Towers for a scoop of colour! 🟧🟩🟥🟦⁠ ⁠ Situated in the Amanora Park township in Pune, India, Future Towers takes the form of a singular mountainous structure with peaks and valleys, incorporating 1,068 apartments in nine wings ranging from 17 to 30 storeys, all organised around four circulation cores.⁠ ⁠ Brightly coloured "scoops" puncture the façade and provide communal spaces and ventilation for the project. The open structure of WERK12 creates a frame through which curiosities meet, placing the interior in conversation with the exterior. 🪟 💡⁠ ⁠ This flexible structure is created by moving the staircases and elevator to the outside of the building, offering a public route up the building and creating stunning views towards central Munich on the upper levels, while allowing the interiors to adapt to a wide range of uses.⁠ ⁠ The mixed-use project combines a simple form with honest materials and transparent facades, engaging the surroundings in unexpected ways. How can we combine the intimacy, surprise, and liveliness of a historic city with the sustainability, density, and comfort of the modern city? ⁠🏘️➕🏢❔⁠ ⁠ Located on the east of the Garonne River, across from Bordeaux’s UNESCO World Heritage historic centre, Ilot Queyries creates an intimate urban setting with plenty of light, air, and a large collective green space for its 282 homes. ⁠ ⁠ The project responds to its context from all angles and fills the site to its boundaries. The roofs are arranged into carefully calibrated slopes, providing maximum ventilation, daylight, and sun to the building itself and to its neighbours. ⁠ ⁠ At the heart of the building, a 5,200-square-metre courtyard takes on a park-like quality and hides the residents’ parking below. In 2010 we took a swing at finding the perfect balance between nature and architecture!⚖️🌳⁠ ⁠ Situated in the quintessentially English countryside, by a small lake, Balancing Barn is simultaneously a peaceful retreat and an exciting holiday home.⁠ ⁠ Taking the traditional form of a barn, the building’s modern design and engineering stands out as a dramatic response to the picturesque natural setting. The authentic shape with its pitched roof, referencing the local agricultural vernacular, is counterbalanced by the shiny metal façade and cantilevered structure. A unique linear experience of nature is provided by the glass floors and the 15-metre cantilever, where the swing is situated, which accounts for half of the project length. ⁠ ⁠ Balancing Barn allows for a new experience of the countryside with its updated aesthetic and form: a house plunging headlong into nature. Allowing children to swim in the remnants of their city’s history is fantastic, don’t you think? 🌊⁠ That's what happens at Tainan Spring!⁠ ⁠ This innovative transformation project simultaneously preserves the site's past and creates opportunities for new memories, demonstrating that well-designed public spaces are a great tool to capture history while writing new stories.⁠ ⁠ Tainan, from the 17th century, used its water network as the core of its marine and fishing industry. In the 1980s the city shifted its urban approach and built the former China-Town mall on top of the old harbour area. By the 2010s this commercial structure no longer served its purpose, negatively affecting downtown Tainan’s vitality.⁠ ⁠ Our design approach focused on combining these chapters of Tainan’s heritage while breathing new life into the space. The mall is removed and meticulously recycled, with elements of its structure preserved to stick out of the lagoon like a contemporary Roman forum.
