Definitely avoid #6 (styrofoam).   🌎 …and don’t forget to bring your #4 plastic wrap/film with you. STOP.    Just because it looks and feels like plastic does not mean it is recyclable.     In fact, 1 in 4 items that are dropped in the recycling bin are NOT recyclable and cause contamination of entire batches of otherwise perfectly good recycling.     Why does it matter? China stopped accepting recyclable materials from the US and other developed countries because of all the contamination. This move by China back in 2017 broke the fragile global #recycling system, and we’ve not created a sustainable replacement solution yet.     Recycling plants all over the country are shutting down because it is increasingly expensive to handle all the non-recyclables included in recycling batches.     Lack of education is a major contributor to this problem so let’s start with the basics:    🌎 #1 and #2 plastics are generally accepted in all recycling programs (they are considered high quality plastics and worth more) but #3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 either can’t be recycled or require special handling.     🌎 Plastic bags cause massive issues for the sorting machines. Check if they are #4 plastic and drop them off to your local grocery store for special handling.     🌎 Heavy food-soaked packages should get rinsed or separated before being recycled.    🌎 #5 plastics are typically NOT accepted in curbside pickup in the US. Many food items (like yogurt containers) are #5 so look for the symbol before tossing (or better yet - stop buying products in #5 plastics).    🌎 Avoid “tanglers” or strands of plastic that can choke up sorting machines.     Not sure? 30 minutes. That’s all it took to pick up this pile. On a beach that regularly has trash hunters.     When I walked on the beach as a child, I used to look for shore life, nature, shells, lucky rocks, and driftwood.     Now, I find myself looking for flecks of neon colors, trash, packaging, micro plastics, and discarded fishing line.     It’s not just one type of trash. Some things you should know about #chips (or crisps) bags:        🌎 Chips are one of the top 5 most popular snacks around the globe. The US has the saltiest palette - 63% of Americans have eaten a bag of chips in the last 30 days.    🌎 Chip bags are made from mixed materials and CANNOT be recycled in standard curbside pickup. They are a mix of polypropylene plastic and aluminum which can’t be separated during #recycle sorting.    🌎 Big producers have experimented with biodegradable bags but mostly discontinued them because they were found to be too noisy.    🌎 Most chips bags take 80 years to decompose.     🌎 The bags are filled with nitrogen gas to preserve the food and reduce breakage. This requires larger bags than necessary to accommodate the space for the air barrier.    🌎 @Lays (owned by @Pepsi, the second worst plastic polluter on earth in 2020) sells over 200 million bags of chips each year.    🌎 To increase profits, Lays has reduced the number of chips per bag by half an ounce (roughly 5 chips) which means the packaging is still the same size for less product. Corporate profits are killing the planet.     Corporations have misled, confused, and gaslighted consumers for decades in order to protect their shareholders’ interests and increase their bottom-line.     We are seeing shared marketing tactics from the big offenders. Misdirection and misinformation from Big Tobacco has resulted in millions of deaths from smoking. Lobbying from NRA keeps assault weapons on the street and responsible for mass killings. In the 1960’s, the sugar industry paid scientists to convinced us that fat is worse for your health thus opening up a massive market of sweet additives to almost every food we process and eat.     Big Plastic is using these same tactics to convince the public that we are responsible for recycling their plastic waste (only 9% is actually recycled), and Big Oil is doubling down on plastics as their future growth market as global demand for fuel slows.     As an individual consumer, you can make a difference by being selective about which brands you buy from. But the real change will happen when the governments around the globe increase their enforcement of corporate polluters and hold them accountable to their waste.     We need stronger regulations now. This poor manta ray doesn’t have a chance. It is a filter feeder, which means it swims with its mouth open to collect food. It is supposed to be gathering krill and plankton, but instead, is swallowing plastic trash that has leaked into the #ocean.    This beautiful creature will certainly die.     Once ingested, plastic takes up space in the animal’s stomach and prevents it from digesting real food, resulting in death by starvation.     Like #mantarays, #whales, #baskingsharks, and #whalesharks are just some of the other ocean filter feeders who are suffering the same fate. They have no natural defenses against accidental consumption of our #plastic waste.     Human plastic waste has exponentially increased from 1.8 million tons in 1950 to 465 million tons in 2018. We are on pace to more than double current levels in the next 30 years.     Every one of us must take personal responsibility or we will certainly destroy the inhabitants of this planet.
