She is the founder of Iinisskimmaakiim, Buffalo Stone Woman, Indige-Scape tours. @buffalostonewoman Today, we are visiting “Grotto Canyon Trail” located within Treaty 7 territory. When I first was invited, I was nervous that I wasn’t going to be able to complete the hike itself. Even though I am active, I still get nervous about exploring new territory. Heather assured me that the terrain we were taking was going to be safe. This hike reminded me of the importance of having self awareness + the ability to notice our own thought patterns. Meditation is a powerful tool that can help shift those thought patterns and improve your mental and physical wellbeing. Studies show it can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, improve focus and concentration, and increase feelings of peace and calmness. Within Indigenous cultures, forms of meditation are found within our rituals and ceremonies that honor the land and the spirits that inhabit it. (We may just not call it that) Why not give it a try? Find a quiet spot in nature, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to connect with the natural world around you. 🌿🌊✨ Doing something new can be uncomfortable. However, it is important, not only for your own individual growth, but the growth of your community and your nation. The Blackfoot name for Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is Áísínai’pi, which means “it is pictured/written.” Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Áísínai’pi has the largest collection of First Nation petroglyphs and pictographs on the great plains of North America. The Blackfoot believe the fascinating hoodoo landscape here is home to powerful spirits that write their truths in the rocks, and in the past, Áísínai’pi was a place where young warriors came to fast and pray on vision quests. #ExploreAlberta

With 634 different First Nation communities in Canada, representing more than 50 Nations and 70 Indigenous languages, each with their own distinct Traditional Knowledge, there is a lot to celebrate! 📍Alberta is located on the traditional territories of Treaties 6, 7 and 8, as well as the eight Métis Settlements (Buffalo Lake, East Prairie, Elizabeth, Fishing Lake, Gift Lake, Kikino, Paddle Prairie and Peavine) and six Métis Regions within the province. We honour and acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples who have been present on this beautiful and diverse land since time immemorial.
