The Isabel Bader Centre at Queen's University is situated on the Northeastern shores of Lake Ontario. The breathtaking views and natural calm of the lake inspired the design language and material choices for the center, creating an open, crisp and clear space for students to focus on Arts Education. The stainless steel façade of the new structures reflects back upon the monochromatic whites and greys of the winter skies and frozen lake. When entering The Isabel, students and guests are greeted by a large public lobby with stunning waterfront views. This social meeting place is conceived as a seamless continuation of the spectacular landscape. Portions of the ceiling plane are finished with the same reflective metal as the facade, bringing reflections of the lake and landscape into the building. The design of the outdoor spaces at the new planetarium and observatory at Douai has two distinct characteristics; the surrounding landscape and an elliptical interior courtyard. Both help to create a coherent and contextualized cultural destination that takes advantage of the outstanding features of the site while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The landscape is designed to promote biodiversity and integrates the materials present on the site. The garden has a continuous pathway connecting various outdoor spaces and the building. The path is paved with natural bluestone from Belgium, providing an additional layer of texture and visual expression. Please welcome our first completed planetarium in France! In the beautiful city of Douai in northern France, a new planetarium and observatory named Orionis recently opened, with curves that wrap around the two domes of the building, inspired by the elliptical and continuous movement of the stars. Situated between the adjacent Scarpe river and the archaeological museum Arkéos, the project aims to harmoniously connect these elements and create an accessible and inspiring space for visitors. In 2019, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum approached Snøhetta to design a landscape project for their sixth-floor ramp. Snøhetta transformed the space by building a relationship between the planters and the artwork, creating layers within the open gallery, and inviting visitors to meander, take meaningful pauses, and gather around the green enclosures. The typical journey through the Guggenheim is sculpted by towering ramps and natural curves. Snøhetta sought to redirect and shift this movement with the introduction of the planters upon entering the floor. Taking geometric cues from the building, the placement of the planters seeks to shape the user’s journey through spots of altered perspective and new viewpoints of the artwork. By seamlessly blending functionality and symbolism, The Best Weapon serves as a tangible reminder of the power inherent in peaceful conversations. In 2018, Snøhetta provided the overall design for the Verizon Executive Education Center and the Graduate Roosevelt Island Hotel tower. Completed in the fall of 2021, the 36,500-square-foot executive education center and the 196-room hotel tower feature a shared infrastructure that enhances operational efficiency. These strategically connected buildings serve Cornell Tech and offer amenities like a flexible banquet hall, multi-purpose classrooms, and captivating views of the campus and the city. The educational building, situated at a central location, boasts an intimate and organic design, emphasizing a conducive learning environment. With its warm material palette and vertical aluminum louvers covered in western red cedar, it blends harmoniously with the surroundings. These carefully positioned louvers frame stunning city views while showcasing the proximity of Cornell Tech to New York City's vibrant core. Aligned along the primary pedestrian path known as the Tech Walk, the two buildings create a seamless connection. The shared courtyard opens this pathway, encouraging casual interactions between Cornell students, hotel guests, and the public. In 2015, Drøbak Montessori School commissioned Snøhetta to design their new secondary school in Drøbak, Norway, nestled within a captivating forest. This groundbreaking project holds special significance as it pioneers the integration of education and architecture through the creation of the world's first Powerhouse school. The design plays on the connection between education and the built environment. The rectangular building maximizes the harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces, providing a vast play area immersed in the natural surroundings. The new Montessori school embodies the shared vision of integrating sustainability and education by employing passive, sustainable measures like a compact volume, high U-values, and low embodied energy materials. This ensures a low energy demand, aligning with the Powerhouse principles, while creating an optimal learning environment for students. At Snøhetta, a significant focus of our work is researching and developing new and more sustainable ways of doing things. We have teamed up with some of Norway's most experienced contractors, researchers, producers, and suppliers within the concrete and biochar industry to create a new carbon-negative type of concrete we call Biocrete. This week, Biocrete was used for the very first time in a building project – the new barn for Lars Jørstad Nordby close to Bjørkelangen just outside Oslo, Norway. Concrete accounts for around 7 percent of the world's total CO2 emissions. At the same time, Norway discards 1 million tons of wood each year, resulting in CO2 emissions through incineration or decomposition. The idea of Biocrete is to pyrolyze wood by heating it to over 600 degrees without oxygen. As a result, you have biochar with 95 percent pure carbon, which is mixed into regular concrete. If you add 60 kilograms of biochar per cubic meter of concrete, you have stored as much carbon as the production of concrete releases. The result is carbon-negative concrete. Solutions to plastic pollution is the topic for today’s World Environment Day, which is also a topic close to our minds and hearts at Snøhetta. In 2020, together with @nordicoceanwatch and funded by Oslo municipality's Agency for Urban Environment, we designed a new publicly accessible center for learning, research, and knowledge about marine waste's impact on life on earth. The knowledge center served as an inspirational hub for finding collective solutions to marine littering, and today, the first pilot born from this hub has set sails in the Oslo harbour and is currently docking across the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. The floating pavilion is named Oslo Løa is a collaboration between 24 small and big contributors and is designed by students at The Oslo School of Architecture & Design. It will serve as a recycling and waste management hub for both marine and urban waste in Oslo. Providing a place where citizens, companies and politicians can get a hands on experience of the challenges, and be part of the solution.
