So Yvon and his business partner Tom Frost pivoted to aluminum chocks that could be wedged in by hand rather than hammered in and out of cracks. For a long time, wood pellet biomass was considered a sustainable and efficient source of clean energy. Research now shows just how wrong that is. Burning wood pellets for electricity emits more carbon dioxide than burning coal. In the U.S., wood pellets increasingly come from cutting down whole trees—most commonly the fast-growing southern pine—rather than from wood waste. Processing plants also emit hazardous, cancer-causing air pollutants. These impacts fall disproportionately on low-income communities of color throughout the Southeast. On September 29 and 30, in Mississippi’s Homochitto National Forest, Patagonia will join Trail Running Ambassador Peyton Thomas at the Equitable Action Run Towards Health (E.A.R.T.H.).
